Long before Christianity reached Ireland, people marked the Winter Solstice (Grianstad an Gheimhridh) as a celebration of the sun’s return. It was a deeply meaningful time of year, especially at places like Newgrange in County Meath. There, the rising sun on the solstice shines directly into the heart of the ancient monument, lighting up its inner chamber.

@BavariaWatch ? I’m not British. Nor do I commemorate war, just explaining the bells.

@JardinDesign Its sad England did not make after Brexit. I sincerely worry about the future.

@themellowing Yes, it’s lovely here, but my thoughts often wander home to Ireland. Loved this post.

@JardinDesign There was a very special energy at that spot, a little heavy, almost. Echoes of history. How lucky you are to be in the South of France, I dream of visiting one day!

@BigKeithwd129 Yes, a tree that is strikingly beautiful twice a year is a bonus.

Happy Celtic New Year 🍂✨
For the ancient Irish & other Celtic people the day began with the going down of the sun & the New Year with the thinning of the veil and the onset of darkening days 🎃👻
As a tree of both death & rebirth the Yew 🌲 ushers in the first Lunar Month of the year 🌙
Towering in cemeteries & churchyards the Yew seems dark & imposing yet on closer inspection (the females at least) are cloaked in beautiful red berries 🪦 🍒
These berries sustain birds in the cold whilst it's thick foliage of the tree provides sanctuary against the elements 🪶❄️
The berries themselves reflect the two face of the Yew. The flesh is sweet & delightful yet the seeds will bring your heart (& life) to a stop 💔☠️

@JardinDesign Bearing out the truth of the saying "Red sky in the morning, Shepherd's warning"...
it's been dull here from the get go 😏

Love this country sometimes, honestly!
I'll be writing to the @ElecCommIRL suggesting that every polling station has tea and cakes in future
RTÉ News@rtenews
The home of the O'Donovan family is being used as a polling station in Coolmoyne, Co Tipperary. Around 250 people are eligible to vote there and after they will be treated to a cup of tea, a slice of apple or rhubarb tart, or a scone | More: rte.ie/b/1540324
