Your statement "The tax applies to estates worth more than $12 million after a $3 million exemption" is incomplete and I'd argue, misleading. The estate tax kicks in at $3 million. The HIGHEST RATE of 20% kicks in at $12 million, but WA still has an estate tax for levels of $3 million or more (which is now inflation-adjusted.) Exclusion amount — Restored to $2.193 million (with inflation adjustment using Seattle-Tacoma-Bremerton CPI, effectively no real increase long-term). That is, it doesn't just apply to $12 million and up estates. • Tax rates — Reverted to pre-2025 levels (top rate 20%): • $0–$1M: 10% • $1M–$2M: 14% • $2M–$3M: 15% • $3M–$4M: 16% • $4M–$6M: 18% • $6M–$7M: 19% • $7M–$9M: 19.5% • Over $9M: 20%
