These athletes were part of the Soviet Union’s long tradition of extreme aviation sports, where parachuting was closely tied to military research, aerospace development, and national prestige during the Cold War. Stratospheric parachuting involved jumping from aircraft flying 20,000–30,000 feet (6–9 km) or higher, where the air is thin and temperatures can drop below −40°C (−40°F). To survive these conditions, jumpers wore specialized suits and oxygen equipment designed to function in near-stratospheric conditions. The Soviet Union heavily supported parachuting through organizations like DOSAAF, which trained thousands of pilots, skydivers, and technical specialists each year. By the 1970s, Soviet parachutists held dozens of world records for altitude jumps, precision landings, and mass parachute formations, demonstrating the country’s emphasis on aviation skill and physical endurance.
