Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb argues that the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS may be far more unusual than a normal comet and could even represent a low-probability but high-impact “black swan” event.
He points out that even a small chance of alien technology would justify serious attention because an official confirmation could cause global panic, financial instability, and social unrest. Former Bank of England analyst Helen McCaw has also warned that governments should prepare for such a scenario rather than ignore it.
Loeb notes that governments appear to be treating the object as sensitive, with the CIA refusing to confirm or deny having records about 3I/ATLAS and Russia’s President Putin admitting it is an unusual interstellar comet, even while dismissing any danger.
New Hubble images from January 2026 revealed three perfectly symmetrical jets, a geometry that is extremely rare in natural comets and adds to the growing list of mysteries surrounding the object.
According to Loeb, 3I/ATLAS shows many anomalies in its path, timing, physical behavior, and chemical composition, including strange jet activity, unusual brightness and polarization, and odd abundances of elements like nickel.
While he does not claim proof of alien origin, Loeb argues that the sheer number of coincidences makes 3I/ATLAS exceptional and deserving of intense scientific scrutiny, because the implications for humanity would be enormous if even one of these anomalies points to technology rather than nature.
