Football is hard. Players don't talk enough about how difficult it is. Look at Stanley Nwabali. He's Nigeria’s #1 to two consecutive AFCONs. Nigeria finished in the final and semi-final. That's a very high level for an African team. And he was in goal through it. An ordinary onlooker would have thought it's a great level to own a bargaining chip from. The human voice in his head says he's bigger than Chippa United, and he should aim higher. He'd feel he deserves a bigger pay packet, a healthier contract, a higher level. That's the level of his status, but football is harsh. It doesn't always give what you deserve. He's not found a club since he left Chippa. He's lost his national team place and may never get it back. The growth he enjoyed for those three years has been washed away by a single decision. It's easy to blame him, but it's not first time I've seen a Nigerian player jump into the deep end of an ocean without a life jacket. It's a bold decision, but on the other side of it is the brutal part of a sport that is unpredictable. I really hope he gets a club soon. I really do.
