Dear Members, I have written to Premier Danielle Smith and requested that she ask the federal government to reconsider proposed changes to capital gains taxation included in the recently announced federal budget 2024.

It only applies to passive gains, not earned income so if you are investing in the stock market you would need to have millions to reach the 250k threshold in passive income

Hot take: Physicians publicly complaining about the capital gains tax is at best, tone deaf, and at worst, insufferable

@RonSigal1 MDs impacted by this are earning passive income through millions $ in their corps. This is extraordinary wealth relative to average Canadians currently trying to afford the basics

@AdrianaLaGrange This is a disturbing statement coming from our health minister. Are you completely ignorant to how our health care system works or are you lying to us?

My statement on pharmacare: The vast majority of Albertans already have access to drug coverage.   Alberta already has a comprehensive pharmacare program for seniors, low-income Albertans and those who receive disabilities benefits such as AISH.   This program is also available to all Albertans who don’t have coverage, at a subsidized rate.    The Alberta government sponsored drug plans provide coverage for over 5000 different Health Canada approved drugs. The program includes comprehensive coverage including a number of drug classes to treat common conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma and other respiratory diseases, neurological diseases, mental health conditions, birth control, skin conditions, rheumatological diseases, and acute conditions such as infections, pain management, etc. The plan covers over 50 oral contraceptives, intrauterine devices, and emergency contraceptives covered by Alberta’s plan including Mifegymiso. It also covers 16 different diabetes drugs and 9 different insulin products.   We were not consulted about the federal government’s plan, and although information available to us is limited, we have concerns about the proposed limited scope of the federal government’s plan.   The province is willing to work and discuss ways that the federal government can invest in Alberta’s pharmacare program to enhance the existing program that is comprehensive and currently available to Albertans.

This govt is only libertarian when it suits their political agenda. Remember how they were all about person freedoms when it came to vaccines? The only ideology that unifies this party is white supremacy and suppression of marginalized groups. #abpoli @Albertadoctors

It was a pleasure to talk with the Calgary Hospitalists Clinical APR Group yesterday. Hospitalists deliver comprehensive care to patients in hospitals and are essential to the function of our healthcare system.
