My boss kind of ambushed me by asking if I wanted to join a meeting with some high-ranking police people and talk about what being trans is like in the UK right now lol. I only had an hour to prepare what I wanted to say. I think I did okay? For those interested this is roughly what I talked about: I started off introducing myself and saying what I do for work and how I run a trans social group + a support group for parents of trans youth. Then I mentioned and gave an overview of the Supreme Court ruling last year + the EHRC updated code of practice that came out last month. I said there were a lot of concerns with it but instead of discussing them all right now, the main one I wanted to talk about is that trans people are now forced to out themselves whenever they want to access a gendered facility such as a public toilet or changing room. An example would be a trans woman who goes to the pub with her friends will be forced to out herself when she can't use the toilets with her friends. She'd either be forced to use the men's toilets, or use a disabled toilet (which is then taking a space away from disabled people who already struggle for proper inclusion). Then I talked about several things from social media recently, including the M&S video from last month and how certain people are self-appointing themselves as toilet police. I talked about the M&S video trending on twitter worldwide. Then said that all these things, as well as things like Reform's recent success + subsequent banning of libraries under their control from promoting Pride, contributes to an atmosphere where trans people in the UK don't feel welcome when they go outside. I said about how at work we had our pride flag pole torn down recently, and how we'd seen an increasing amount of negative/abusive social media comments. How some staff felt apprehensive opening the door to strangers in case it's someone there to cause trouble. Then finally I wanted to include a personal note so I talked about how I had taken all of my pride badges, pins, and patches off of my backpack because I no longer felt safe walking around with them. I said I didn't feel proud when I went outside, I felt unsafe and vulnerable. Also said that lots of people I know and work with feel the same about going out or the safety of their children. Then they asked me a bunch of questions about what the police can do better, some guy from like a nightlife sector asked me if things were better out at night or during the day, someone else asked if things have gotten worse suddenly or if it has been gradual. I mentioned that a lot of hate incidents go unreported because trust in government + police is extremely low amongst the community. That's most of what I remember. I think I did okay considering I only had an hour to prepare a speech lol.
