Every time NATO bombs a country, the conversation immediately becomes about how terrible that country's leader was. Milošević. Saddam. Gaddafi. Assad. The monster is always pre-positioned. Always ready. So you never have to discuss the 78 days of missiles falling on Belgrade. On bridges. On hospitals. On water treatment plants. On the Chinese embassy. On a television station. Sixteen journalists killed at their desks. Called "collateral damage" from 15,000 feet. "Failed communist state." Yugoslavia had a higher standard of living than most of Eastern Europe. Free movement. Free healthcare. Free education. Western trade relationships. Its own independent foreign policy that defied Moscow. Not exactly the profile of a failed state. "Made up of different cultures." So is Switzerland. So is Belgium. So is the United States, spectacularly so. Diversity didn't kill Yugoslavia. Western interference, IMF structural adjustment gutting its economy through the 1980s did. And a very deliberate Western strategy of recognizing breakaway republics before any political settlement existed. Germany recognized Croatia in December 1991. Unilaterally. Against the advice of the UN Secretary General. That recognition was gasoline. And since we're doing the full history: Operation Storm, 1995. Croatia ethnically cleansed over 200,000 Serbs from Krajina in days. The largest single ethnic cleansing in Europe since World War II. U.S. operational support. General Wesley Clark helped plan it. You didn't hear much about it because it was the right kind of ethnic cleansing, conducted by the right kind of people. NATO didn't bomb Serbia to stop Milosevic. They had cozy relationships with far worse leaders that same decade, in Saudi Arabia, in Egypt, in Indonesia, where the bodies were still warm. They bombed Serbia because a European country was resisting the architecture of the post-Cold War order, and that required an example. Same logic as Vietnam. Different accent. My point was never about whether Yugoslavia was a paradise. It was about power and the ability to respond to power. Yugoslavia had none. It absorbed 78 days and surrendered. Iran absorbed 48 hours and made Trump publicly beg China for help. That's the only comparison I was making. You can despise Milošević and still recognize that NATO had no UN mandate, no legal authority, and no right to bomb a European capital while calling it "humanitarianism." Those two things are not in conflict.

@nxt888 Your posts are always very smart, and to the point, this is the first complete miss. Yu was a failed communist state, made up out of 6 republis, different in culture, religion, and development. Milosevic was a mass murderer. Serbia attacked and killed thousands of Croats and others!

American gun culture really is just consumerism and nothing else. It’s about an image and building a collection, it’s no different than kawaii egirls collecting labubus. Most of these folks have no intention to defend anything or anybody.

BREAKING: Hundreds of workers at a key supplier of Navy ships are on strike. 650 designers, clerks, and engineers walked out of Bath Iron Works, rejecting a contract from General Dynamics. The workers say the offer doesn't sufficiently address wages, insurance, or retirement.

Today I$rael tried to kill me in a targeted airstrike in southern Lebanon as I was reporting on was the targeting of bridges and the forced displacement of 1 million people, an ethnic cleansing operation on a larger scale than the Nakba I have absolutely no doubt that this was deliberate. Despite claims there were no warnings ahead of the strike and no notifications sent to the Lebanese Army who allowed us to film As we have seen in Gaza they want to silence journalists who document and report their war crimes It is the western powers who provide political and military support for I$rael, arming it to the teeth to carry out genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing here in Lebanon. They are not simply complicit, but active participants and should be held accountable for their actions. But if I$rael thinks today’s strike will silence us and keep us out of the field they are very, very mistaken

@NukedUSA This premise seems to be based on the fantasy that Vietnam would still be stuck in the 60-70's. Do you honestly believe that Vietnam wouldn't improve their own military capabilities today?

If the Vietnam war happened with modern tech, every single Vietnamese general would've been killed in the first week. The US would've been able to track and precisely bomb Vietnamese troops day in day out without them having any real capacity to fight back. Things have changed.

Vietnam happened during a completely different era of warfare. Targeting was imprecise. All attacks were manned. And the situation was also very different, with millions of troops on the ground on both sides. There's barely anything even applicable
Sarah@Sarah_pdx

I understand why people are hesitant to write it but if we’re going to have a “what can we learn from how the U.S. was defeated in Vietnam” round of discourse I think the most pertinent comparison is that the tactics of the axis of resistance are far less effective than Vietnam’s

You intentionally decided to chase clout and I hope they come for you just as you wish. Who said Iran's bombing of the UAE is linked to Sudan? Who doesn't know that Iran is not a cowardly country that wouldn't want to sit idly against its aggressor? You cannot claim not to understand what is meant by "Iran is liberating Sudan". You're simply (unknowingly perhaps), kicking off a bullshit resentment among African supporters of Iran, who try to add up the Iran war in a broader geopolitical context, and their counterparts who sympathize with Sudan. Everything doesn't deserve to be tweeted about. Stop creating space for unnecessarily destructive agendas.
Saroyah♡ྀི🎀@saroyahx

In all seriousness, Iran is not liberating Sudan. Sudanese men and women are. People who had no choice but to pick up arms to defend their country. Thousands have died for Sudan, not for you to praise Iran. Iran is bombing US assets in the UAE for its own geopolitical reasons, not for Sudan. Sudan is fighting to liberate itself from the UAE-backed RSF.
