@bilal_akh driving culture is certainly part of the answer but i also think calgary's road network is designed to minimize conflict points and to separate modes/speeds (though we can go much farther still)

@KrishnRamesh I agree that culturally Calgary is pretty urban (I’ve visited almost 10 times!). What I find surprising is that it wins out on pedestrian safety over cities that feel even more urban, like SF. Atlanta is a low bar to compare to

@bilal_akh by contrast Calgary has major highways like Deerfoot or Stoney but also lots of traffic-light roads designed for transport that mostly aren't dangerous stroads (Shagannapi, Bow, Memorial, Barlow)

@bilal_akh there are major exceptions of course like Macleod Trail or 16 Ave which are dangerous stroads but in Ontario/Atlanta that is pretty much all you will find aside from 400-series highways or interstates

This person is correct that Toronto and Vancouver don’t get real winters (this year being an exception in Toronto) but there’s a different point:
A real Calgary or Montreal winter is better than the average Toronto winter.

I was hoping that this was a bad dream that I would wake up from, but I guess not. The 🇨🇦 lunar rover science team was told this a few weeks ago. I still can’t believe it. I am so upset for the science team, particularly all the students. We’ve done so much work and come such a long way that to see this mission “terminated” is heartbreaking. I was a PhD student when the late Marc Garneau boldly stated Canada would build a rover to go to Mars. That didn’t happen. And what was going to be Canada’s first ever rover mission and first ever planetary exploration mission that we would leave is now also not going to happen. I hope the next generation will see a 🇨🇦 rover on the Moon. I really wished it would be our generation.

@pitdesi this data is way off for Canada. looking at the methodology it is using decade old individual tax data (and also when CAD was close to par with USD). most high earning physicians bill through their corporation and pay themselves low salaries to minimize taxes.
