@pntrack We did max-outs on Bench, Squat, Hang Cleans my senior year of college. We had 22 sprinters. I was dead last on Bench, 20th on Squat, and like 11th on Hang Cleans. Oh and I was the fastest in the 400m and second-fastest in the 200m on the team.

The argument of stronger = faster, has been a contentious subject for many years. Strength is good. Strength supplements speed. Strength gains can and will often improve speed. Sprinters lift. Sprinters typically have amazing-looking bodies. But stronger isn’t always faster. “The strongest are seldom the fastest. ~Boo Schexnayder Power lifters and bodybuilders are seldom the fastest guys on the track team. We learn by stories. ⤵️ When Covid shut everyone down, I had 8 fast sophomore track athletes who also played 🏈. These 8 guys found a gym and lifted like madmen. They had nothing else to do. They got super strong and posted flex-pics often. When things opened up a year later, one of the 8 was faster (slightly). 7 of 8 were slower by an average of one mph. They never got their speed back during their junior track season. None of the 7 ran track as seniors. They continued to play 🏈. Lifting in the absence of sprinting, jumping, bouncing, and throwing will often make athletes slower. Is that anti-strength? No. But, stronger ≠ faster. It’s more correct to say that athletes who get faster, get stronger. 🏋️‍♂️ Just because fast guys are strong doesn’t mean strong guys are fast. Sprint, lift, jump, bounce, throw… but make speed the priority.

Had a great St. Patrick’s day meet at Stevenson for indoor conference. Conference champ in 400m dash (52 seconds) and shortly after anchored my second place 4x4 squad (54 seconds) Can’t wait for outdoor season!

Team culture doesn’t form during meetings or scheduled activity. It forms during the in between moments. The cool down conversations, the shared anxiety while awaiting a race, the adventures once the performance is complete and you’ve got hours to kill in a different city.

@CoachSwit One Track & Field team in my D3 conference back in the early 00's had four Olympic Trials qualifiers (and one Olympic Champion) in one recruiting class. Most SEC schools would be lucky to get that in one year.

One thing you hear often is: “If I don’t go D1, I’ll just go D2 and dominate.” Like D2 is intramurals. There are D2 arms 90–94 with real breaking stuff. D2 hitters can flat out rake. Older. Stronger. Skilled. Levels change. Talent doesn’t disappear. Baseball humbles fast.

@stevemagness Elitism is a thing in every sport. If you run, you are a runner. Commentators who use phrases like “jogged a 4 hour marathon” don’t help.

Most people don't understand running. It's why a non-runner will be more impressed by someone who jogged a 4 hour marathon than a kid who ran a 14 minute 5k In the sport, we obsess over what "fast" is, grading and judging ourselves Outside of it...no one has any freaking clue

In the past few days, I've had people get offended that I... -said a 2:46 marathon wasn't elite but a serious amateur. -called 9+ minute pace jogging. -recommended that people don't need to carry a water bottle on shorter runs. Social media makes us hyper reactive to everything.

Specializing a kid early on is bad. Have them do different sports. For example: XC - fall Indoor track - winter Outdoor track - spring

@pntrack We had literally no space on our fourth day of practice this year, so I had the kids go outside for 5-8 x 100m on the curve with a walkback recovery. That's the most we've done on week 1 since I adopted Feed The Cats. Kids did fine! Would I do 8x400m EVER with sprinters? NO!

Two reports of malpractice today. 🥴 1st day boys 8th grade track practice: 10 min warmup, then 8x 400. Another school… 🥴 Typical sprint practice: 1600m of sprint repeats. There’s no way to sugarcoat this. Kids are miserable and get injured.

Just saw a video of a coach doing an interview with the perfect quote: there are three types of kids on a team 1)kid that wants a tee shirt 2)kid that wants to be a starter 3)kid that wants to be a champion. All three are fine just don’t be the kid that only wants the team tee shirt pretending you want to be a champion.

@mar5hallhoops I knew I should have skipped my dad's funeral to attend track practice that day. That's all that held me back from going pro.

How my son became a pro? Here’s a reason…not one coach he ever played for since the age of 5 heard this phrase… “Coach, I can’t make it to practice because…”. Never, not one time.
