A lot of players & parents are getting bad advice about college baseball. Dream big. Have goals. Nothing wrong with that. But there also has to be some reality involved. Some families are spending thousands on camps/showcases at schools that were never recruiting them.

Some coaches win everywhere they go. Different schools. Different rosters. Different eras. Funny how winning keeps following the same people around. Probably not an accident.

@CoachSwit I typically love your posts but this one is a bit too much. HS umps are fine. Do they miss calls 💯 Do their zones flux, yes. If you think any team lost an opportunity for a playoff game because a high FB was called a strike they missed a lot. Just my 2cent

Might sound crazy, but maybe one day varsity H.S. baseball needs Robot Umpires/ABS System. No disrespect to umpires, but with league titles & playoff spots on the line, consistency behind the plate matters. Cost would be an issue, but something to think about. Thoughts?

Sorry Coach…I can’t do it. I know this has pros and cons and I get what you are saying - I can see it both ways. However I think one of the reasons baseball is so special is because it has been super careful with changing the game. Something like balls and strikes where we have to get an officials decision every few seconds…it means a lot. I think the strategy and the “learning” the ump by pitchers, catchers and hitters is special. I know I’m old school but I think it’s special. I would be a fan of a challenge system like in the pros. But not full control.

Seeing a lot of arm injuries in H.S. baseball this year, especially big velo arms. Throwing hard matters. Everyone wants velocity. But part of coaching is keeping pitchers healthy for the state playoff push. April velo doesn’t matter much if the arm is done by June.

If you are a parent trying to run a HS coach off for your kid not playing I got news for ya You are doing your kid a disservice, you are probably a bad person, and in the long run you’ll definitely find that out The stories I’m hearing from multiple HCs across DFW are baffling and some of yall need a reality check for dang sure Raising spoiled brats ain’t it yall

One of the toughest things as a H.S. coach is seeing players reach their dream of college baseball… then a year or two later, they walk away from the game for whatever reason. That’s why I always say: Enjoy the game while you can. It goes by faster than you think.

“Leave the dugout better than you found it” used to be part of baseball. Still is for me. But in travel ball, it feels like a lost art lately. Trash everywhere, seeds all over, no respect for the field or facility. High School it still seems to be a thing to leave it clean.

What sport humbles you more than baseball? You go 3-for-3 on Monday… then 0-for-3 with 3 punchouts the next day. That’s the game. The real question is: How do you handle failure? Do you quit when it gets hard? Or do you work harder than ever? That’s what separates people.

Too many people get caught up in “my son is going D1.” Then it doesn’t work out, they hit the portal, and suddenly D1 isn’t D1 anymore. Pick the school that FITS YOU. Pick a coach you trust and connect with. Level means nothing if you’re miserable or buried on a roster.

4 travel ball games in one day for kids is out of control. I played professional baseball for a living… and we never even did that.

@OzRamos_ But I do know I have had probably 20 plus kids go to St. Paul over the past 5 years instead of our place.

@CoachSwit Some schools have an agricultural program that accepts students from other towns. Do they recruit? Thoughts?

Connecticut H.S. sports have public, Catholic & private schools in the same leagues. Public schools pull from one town. Private/Catholic schools pull from everywhere. Long Island has a separate Catholic League, which I played in and is very good. Do they recruit? Who knows?

@OzRamos_ We actually have one at our school, I know we have 2 kids in the our program in my 5 years of being there. I actually don’t even know how the process even works, I just heard it’s hard to get into.

Over the years parents have asked me: “He’s a D1 baseball commit… should he still play football?” I get both sides. Football teaches toughness & competitiveness. But I also understand protecting a D1 opportunity families worked years for. No perfect answer. Thoughts?

A lot of youth players start dreaming big in middle school—college baseball, commits, the next level. Nothing wrong with goals. But once high school hits, the pressure takes over for some kids and they forget to enjoy where they are right now. Enjoy the moments. It goes by fast
