Travel Baseball Daily Diary: March 19th Dear Diary, today in Connecticut I saw a video of 8 year olds getting on a plane for their first tournament of the year. High school baseball teams haven’t even had tryouts yet It’s 35 degrees nobody is even practicing outside yet. My son is 8, sometimes I have to tie his shoes before school. But planes for tournaments in March. Sure.

Why do so many kids and parents like the private hitting, pitching, velocity guru more than their high school or college coach? I'll answer that. The private guru doesn't have to win games. The high school or college coach has a W-L record.

I’ve said this before, but with tryouts around the corner… here we go again. A 60-yard dash time isn’t necessary for baseball. This isn’t 1990. Let the haters hate…..

With older college rosters, the transfer portal, and roster limits… This isn’t the era for a “D1 or nothing” mindset. Junior College Baseball is a great option - and for a lot of players, the smarter path.

Overheard a high school sophomore in our facility tonight tell his instructor that have to do a mile run during baseball tryouts because nothing says I wonder if this dude can win a 9 pitch at bat like a 7 minute mile.

@jamiehempel @SmokenMirrors24 @BushKadin In Connecticut it’s anywhere from 2500-6000 dollars for winter workouts and summer season. Fall is usually another 1500.

@SmokenMirrors24 @BushKadin @CoachSwit What do you think a season of travel ball costs? It can vary a lot. My son’s team charges $100 per month when the team is active. Covers uniforms, helmets, league/tournament fees, indoor training, He played on other teams that charged $300 to $500 total.

As youth travel ball starts… Coaches: if you don’t have enough pitching to safely get through a tournament — don’t enter. Too many kids get maxed out just to win a meaningless trophy. No trophy is worth a young arm. Parents — if you allow it, you’re part of the problem.

@CoachSwit Coach I have an open invitation to our local experts when they’re ripping ballplayers I offer them the opportunity to face my 16yr old and if they can get a hit off him they can talk about hitters all they want. Not one has stepped up to face the Bulldog.

For all the experts taking shots at the USA hitters last night… How many of you have actually stood in the box against 98 with plus-plus off-speed? It’s easy to talk from the couch. Different story when you’re 60’6” away trying to compete.

This is said by a person who doesn't understand how the economics of tournaments work. The reason the tournaments aren't even more expensive is because of rebates by the local sports/tourism bureau. Stay to play is the easiest way to secure the rebate. Heads in beds is how they determine the rebate. And hotels nearby would be even more expensive than they would otherwise because the sports bureau secures guaranteed rates.

Every level humbles you. HS Freshman — bottom of the roster. HS Senior — top of the program. College — back to proving you belong. If you’re soft, don’t even bother!

@TalkinOldSchool I coach at a very good school in CT. But have noticed lots of kids coming in are more showcase players then team players of that makes sense

Travel baseball has turned into: Pay tons of money to play. Pay to travel. Pay to stay. Pay to watch your own kid. And somehow… this became normal. Will it ever change or just get worse?

Stay-to-play should be illegal. Tournament owners — you’ve become the problem. Families already pay to play, travel, and eat… now you’re telling them where they have to stay too? At some point, it stops being about baseball.
