Se jugaba la Serie del Caribe de 1986 en Maracaibo, Venezuela. El "Cananea" Reyes era el manager de las Águilas de Mexicali y Nelson Barrera ejecutó el toque de squeeze play más famoso en la historia del beisbol mexicano. Era la parte baja de la novena entrada y el juego estaba empatado a siete carreras. La escuadra mexicana se jugaba el poder seguir peleando por el campeonato contra el fuerte equipo de República Dominicana. Al bat venía, el “Almirante”. Los dominicanos ya sabían de la fama de Nelson Barrera, de ser un bateador de poder. El “Cananea” le ordenó a Nelson que hiciera swing grande al primer lanzamiento, para traer al corredor que estaba en la tercera, que era John Kruk. Cabe recalcar que Kruk era considerado un corredor “pesado” por lo que el fly necesitaba ser profundo para que pudiera anotar. La señal era que si fallaba, entonces pusiera un toque de “squeeze”. Nelson hizo swing grande al primer pitcheo de acuerdo con lo planeado y conectó un violento foul hacia atrás del home. En el segundo lanzamiento dejó un toque perfecto por el lado derecho entre el pitcher y el primera base. ¡Safe en home! Kruk anotó la carrera de la victoria. Al día siguiente el equipo de Mexicali derrotó a Puerto Rico y con eso se coronaron campeones. México ganaba por segunda vez en su historia una Serie del Caribe Ese toque perfecto de Nelson nunca será olvidado. Ruben Amaro dijo en entrevista: “En el beisbol, hay que hacer lo que no espera el enemigo. Y eso es lo que hizo el Cananea con Nelson”
