It's been 8 years since I had a chance to work on music for the first trailer of the Breach expansion. Now it's time to hit harder! Keepers of the Flame!

@nkulw I became a Spurs fan when I was 5 years old because I wanted to be like Mr. Robinson when I grew up. All-time good call.

@lmNOTcatholic GG, wish I could experience it for the first time again.

@NeverSinkDev Abyss in PoE 2 has been such a good multiplier on top of content. I would LOVE for Breach 2.0 to work similarly.

BREACH getting an expansion is FASCINATING from a long-time-PoE player perspective.
Breach is the first 'MAJOR' map encounter added.
Many leagues after everything was compared to the breach and the standard it set (abyss, harbinger, ritual, delirium [..]).
It getting new content AND the first 'expansion league' ever indicates that it either will be massively expanded or GGG has some completely new plans for how it should fit into the game.
Personally very hyped for it.
What do you expect?

@NeverSinkDev "Buff everything else" is how you get Diablo 3. We already had Diablo 3.

I'd like to address 2 arguments I read a lot in PoE/game discussions:
- 'X is strong, but you don't have to use X, it's optional' in case of overpowered mechanics in PoE.
- 'Don't nerf anything, buff everything else'
I believe these to be fundamentally flawed arguments.
Examples are Mercs in PoE1 and Lightning Spear in PoE2.
Especially in PoE freedom and creativity are major appeals. If something is so strong you feel stupid for NOT using it, this massively harms these values.
You heard of FOMO? Well this is worse. It's MO. Actively missing out.
While buffing weaker candidates is good, this is not the right response to 'one mechanic outshines everything else'.
This is because:
1) This usually doesn't address the issue. Overpowered things are usually MECHANICALLY exceptional, not just numerically
2) This creates negative ripple effects and massive power creep.
3) Doesn't address the underlying issue.
I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all solution, but from what I observed the best balance changes are a combination of the following:
- Surgical nerfs. Nerfing non-identity defining aspects is usually better than deleting the identity.
- Mechanical buffs. Just raising the numbers on lesser used candidates rarely works. Figuring out why they're less fun to use and buffing and reworking SYSTEMS seems to be much more important
- Creating contexts where alternatives are better. For instance in PoE2 rarity is such as major issue, because it's great in pretty much any scenario. In PoE1 there's a lot of content that doesn't benefit from it strongly.
What do you think? How do you like your balancing changes?

Open offer to Miss Swift: I cohost the world’s first ever podcast about the Metal Gear Solid series (I sort of think Portable Ops is canon but neither here nor there). Before you write off the ‘net as a cruel, insincere place, please listen to the first 50 hours or so of our show
