Believes libraries should present all viewpoints rather than taking sides in the culture wars. This is now a rabid right-wing position. Personally anti-woke.

@KurtSchlichter This is like complaining about losing a close basketball game because they made a bunch more 3-pointers, but you "really" won because you made more total shots. Trump wasn't trying to get more popular votes, he was trying to get more Electoral College votes.
English

@jondelarroz I'm sure I'll check the first one out from the library someday when it's on Blu-ray, but I don't have any great hope of getting all the way through it.

Hunt for Gollum cast is out. McKellen as Gandalf. Elijah Wood as Frodo. Dornan as Aragorn/Strider. Kate Winslet as Sméagol's mother, who Tolkien never wrote. Jackson producing. December 2027.
Here's what they're not saying loudly: the entire "Hunt for Gollum" story in the books is about three pages of appendices. Three pages. They are going to write an entire theatrical film out of almost nothing, which means the story will be mostly invention, which is exactly what Boyens did with War of the Rohirrim when she created a whole girlboss character Tolkien never wrote and then said "we can't ruin the books" when fans pushed back.
Boyens is back. The woman who gave us that line is writing this.
And then the follow-up film is being co-written by Stephen Colbert.
I don't see any way that this doesn't keep going in the direction of Rings of Power. Do you have any hope for these films?

@CrownMaybe Science fiction writers have been exploring the idea of rights for extraterrestrial and artificial intelligences for years. I'd be shocked if there haven't been some real world conferences or symposiums where actual lawyers and academics have discussed it.
English

@MAGALibrarian I dunno but man what a great Con Law exam question.
English

The problem with this excellent argument is that in order to determine he isn't human -- he presents and appears to be one and can even mate with the females of our species, even if the offspring are stupid -- is that it would require testing the government can't force.
MAGA Librarian@MAGALibrarian
@SandyofCthulhu He's not a human being, though. I think that eligibility for citizenship and recognition of legal rights and responsibilities for non-human sentients (and artificial ones) would have to be addressed by a constitutional amendment or Supreme Court ruling.
English

@bn1beast @SandyofCthulhu I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that the official US Code defines "persons" specifically as member of the species home sapiens. It's been extended to corporations and other artificial legal entities created by humans, but I don't think it has been to any other living creatures.
English

@MAGALibrarian @SandyofCthulhu The question isn't of "human". It is of personhood. Superman is definitely a person.
English

The truth about Superman's legal status.
He was taken in as a foundling by the Kents, who were American citizens. According to current ICE rules, a foundling of unknown origin under the age of 5 is considered to be an American citizen if the child's guardians are American citizens. This does NOT require that the child is formally adopted or naturalized.
Therefore, Clark Kent is unequivocally an American citizen, and this has nothing to do with his nation of origin. His status could only be disputed if his original parents showed up and tried to claim him when he was still a minor, which they didn't.

@DanielM77380264 @bledensow @Celebrim42 @SandyofCthulhu Exactly. Superman is easy - he looks like us & protects us. If the baby from the rocket grew into a sentient 6-eyed creature with mottled white and green skin, a disgusting stench detectible from a mile away, and no useful powers, would he be made a citizen, with all the rights?
English

@bledensow @Celebrim42 @MAGALibrarian @SandyofCthulhu What about Detective Chimp? pre-Crisis, he's unable to testify in court for his fees, so most of his clients don't pay him. If a super intelligent chimp that can speak every language at once doesn't qualify as a "person", why should Superman?
English

@CrownMaybe If we found an undiscovered tribe of Homo neanderthalensis deep in the Pacific Northwest (yes, I know this is so unlikely to be basically impossible, but hypothetically), would they automatically be American citizens?
English

@Gwensluny @SandyofCthulhu Superman, sure. He looks human and doesn't use his abilities to acquire wealth and political power. What about a selfish Kryptonian who can destroy the economic system of Earth with an afternoon trip to the asteroid belt? What about a Predator?
English

@MAGALibrarian @SandyofCthulhu I am certain a Kryptonian would be granted citizenship faster than you can blink, in literally any country, and most especially by the USA.
English

@Gwensluny @SandyofCthulhu Of course it's a silly argument. It's a comic book. If/when we do encounter a non-human sentient, whether from another planet or one we've created, though, it will be a very serious one, and not one whose outcome is certain.
English

@MAGALibrarian @SandyofCthulhu Chimpanzees are not persons, Superman is, further, he's a citizen. He is literally indistinguishable from a human until he does kryptonian stuff. It's a silly argument.
English

@Gwensluny @SandyofCthulhu I'm fairly certain that any US cases where someone has tried to argue that a chimpanzee or other non-human being should have constitutional rights, the ruling has been that these rights only apply to humans.
English

@MAGALibrarian @SandyofCthulhu I don't recall the part of the Constitution that says anything about only humans.
English

@Super70sSports If ever there was a first round that said "this one's not going to the score cards," this was it.

@jasonwhitlock The league's not going to make money no matter what they do, so they might as well virtue signal.

@BrentCooperMOTK @jondelarroz The new guy looks like he should be the desk jockey who gets himself transferred to the Enterprise for on-ship service he needs for a promotion, and spends all his time quoting Starfleet and Federation regulations. Then freezes when real action hits.
English

@MAGALibrarian @jondelarroz Biggest downgrade ever. Not the actor’s fault but the casting director.
English

@DaddyWarpig Hey, how about we remake "Night of the Living Dead," but without any of the stuff that made it a classic!
English

It takes some real fricken balls to put "It's like nothing we've ever seen before" in a remake of Romero's "Night of the Living Dead."
Not only have we seen THIS before, TWICE, but every single zombie movie since has been based on this.
That's an unfortunate choice of words.

Vivica A. Fox stars in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, a brand new upcoming remake of George A. Romero's classic zombie masterpiece. Directed by Christopher Ray.

@60Minutes They don't have churches they can attend in their home countries?
