The Ministry of Fisheries، agriculture and Ocean Resources, Maldives, participated in the 38th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific.
At the Conference, Minister @Shiyamaldives delivered a recorded statement highlighting the unique challenges faced by the Maldives and other Small Island Developing States, while outlining national priorities in strengthening food security, advancing resilient agrifood systems, and promoting a sustainable blue economy.
He further emphasized scaling up climate-smart agriculture, the empowerment of people, particularly youth and women and shared a transformative vision for building resilient and inclusive food systems, while calling for enhanced international collaboration to support Small Island Developing States.

The Maldives continues to engage actively at the Global Seafood Marketplace 2026 held in Barcelona.
At the “From Maldives to the World” panel, Minister @Shiyamaldives underscored a key message: sustainability must be consistently and fairly rewarded across global markets.
This is particularly timely as the Maldives receives landmark recognition under the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch programme, the first country-specific ratings for tuna fisheries.
The focus now must be on ensuring that responsible fisheries are supported through equitable market outcomes.

During the fair, we hosted a side event at the Maldives Pavilion under the theme “From Maldives to the World.” The session featured a panel discussion with the Honorable Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam; Policy and Stakeholder Engagement Director at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Josh Madeira; and Strategic Consultant at Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company, Athif Shakoor. The discussion explored key challenges and opportunities shaping the Maldives’ fisheries sector, with a particular focus on sustainability, market access, and value creation. The panel discussion was held to promote and celebrate the ratings update by the Seafood Watch for Maldives.
