The Maldives continues to engage actively at the Global Seafood Marketplace 2026 held in Barcelona. At the “From Maldives to the World” panel, Minister @Shiyamaldives underscored a key message: sustainability must be consistently and fairly rewarded across global markets. This is the premier global seafood marketplace, connecting the entire seafood industry for three days of business, innovation, and networking. During the fair, we hosted a side event at the Maldives Pavilion under the theme “From Maldives to the World.” The session featured a panel discussion with the Honorable Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam; Policy and Stakeholder Engagement Director at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Josh Madeira; and Strategic Consultant at Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company, Athif Shakoor. The discussion explored key challenges and opportunities shaping the Maldives’ fisheries sector, with a particular focus on sustainability, market access, and value creation. The panel discussion was held to promote and celebrate the ratings update by the Seafood Watch for Maldives. The updated guidance recommends Maldivian skipjack and yellowfin tuna as sustainable seafood choices, reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a global leader in responsible tuna fisheries. Notably, the updated assessments show that sustainability performance varies across Indian Ocean tuna fisheries, and within this context, the Maldives stands out as the only country in the region where both skipjack and yellowfin tuna are consistently rated as a “Best Choice”, highlighting the strength of our one-by-one pole-and-line and handline fisheries. #FromMaldives The Ocean’s finest!

Maldives has achieved a landmark global recognition with the first-ever country-specific Seafood Watch ratings from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program. This significant milestone underscores our unwavering commitment to sustainable fisheries management and the responsible stewardship of our ocean resources. It further strengthens our growing list of international sustainability recognitions, including the recent expansion of MSC certification to our yellowfin tuna fisheries using both pole-and-line and handline methods, alongside our Fair Trade certification, meaning our entire tuna fleet is now MSC certified. These achievements proudly showcase the strength, selectivity, and integrity of our traditional fishing practices, reinforcing Maldives’ leadership in ocean sustainability. They also reflect President @MMuizzu 's vision to sustain and continuously enhance the defining characteristics of Maldivian fisheries in the global arena, and to actively work towards strengthening this position. Together with our dedicated fishers, industry partners, scientists, and fisheries managers, we remain committed to building a resilient and thriving blue economy.

MFORMPC participated in the Saudi International Marine Exhibition, held in Riyadh from 26 to 28 January 2025. During the event, we showcased a curated selection of high quality products supplied by MIFCO and engaged actively with potential buyers and key industry stakeholders. We facilitated direct negotiations between interested parties and MIFCO, establishing a foundation for the future export of MIFCO products to the Saudi market. Additionally, we held productive discussions with potential investors interested in exploring opportunities to invest in the sports fishing and aquaculture industry of the Maldives, highlighting its strong potential for sustainable growth and development. #FromMaldives
