In addition, the language of the former Health Secretary and use of the word ‘plod’ is much more a reflection on him than it is on the committed police officers and staff on the frontline protecting the country from Covid-19.

Messages from a former Health Secretary revealed last night seek to give an impression of direct pressure and control being exerted by ministers on policing action during the pandemic.

Last night’s attack on Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shocking and horrific. My thoughts remain with John, his family, and colleagues at @PoliceServiceNI and beyond. Know that all of us in the policing family support you, and are here for you at this difficult time.

We know the trust in policing that has been lost will only be rebuilt by the public seeing the results of our action in the coming months and years.

That means more troubling details emerging. There is no quick fix, but this is the only way we can be sure of ridding our organisations of criminals, misogynists, racists and anyone who discriminates.

It is yet another dark week for policing. But it’s nothing compared to the decades of pain and trauma suffered by the victims of David Carrick and others who should never be in uniform. This is a week for them, for them to be heard and for their courage to be commended [THREAD]

Anyone with concerns about serving police officers, no matter how small, I urge you to report your concerns to the police so we can root out anyone who does not deserve to serve the public.

It is dependent upon us as a police service to root out abusers and misogynists with urgency, fully and for the long term. I reaffirm that police chiefs are determined to do that.

I feel shame that someone like David Carrick was ever allowed to put on a police uniform. I commend the bravery of all his victims for coming forward to ensure he was brought to justice.
