New research out today! What does school breakfast really mean for secondary school students? When teenagers miss breakfast, they’re missing a lot more. Research shows that skipping breakfast holds young people back. At a key moment in their lives, it can harm their health, wellbeing and achievement, and make it harder to feel like they belong. But the findings are clear: young people who have breakfast are healthier and happier. School breakfasts provide a safe, familiar space to start the day and deliver real outcomes: 📚 Better academic performance and skills development 💼 Stronger employment prospects, with fewer young people struggling to move into work, training or further education 🚫 Lower levels of antisocial behaviour and offending 🤝 Stronger belonging and participation With secondary school breakfast provision uncertain beyond 2026, we’re launching #MoreThanBreakfast 📣 Because this is about more than breakfast. It’s about giving young people the best start to their day – and the rest of their lives. Find out more and join the campaign 👉 utm.guru/unPs9 #SchoolBreakfasts #NourishingFutures

Another important step forward for school breakfasts! 🥣✨ We’re really pleased to see the UK Government's Free Breakfast Club Programme continue to grow. With 500 additional primary schools joining in England, thousands more children will benefit from a nourishing breakfast at the start of the school day. Plus with today's announcement outlining the Government's plans to update School Food Standards, which for the first time, will include dedicated breakfast standards, we look forward to seeing new breakfast club menus full of nutritional value. 🍎 This news comes as we expect the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill to be passed into law soon, helping to establish breakfast as a sustained part of school life. #SchoolFoodStandards #SchoolBreakfasts #FreeBreakfastClubProgramme

The Scottish Government has a target to reduce relative child poverty to lower than 10% by 2030. 📉 Last week, they published their final plan to deliver this target. At Magic Breakfast, we’re delighted that this is the first plan which commits to the Scottish Government’s long-term promise on school breakfasts. 🥣✨ But if Scotland is to meet the legally binding targets set by the Parliament, more action is needed. 🔎 Read our full response from Finlay Allmond, our Scotland Policy and Public Affairs Manager: utm.guru/umHV6 #ScottishGovernment #ChildPoverty #SchoolBreakfasts

It’s easy to focus on the visible signs of morning hunger, like children feeling tired, struggling to concentrate, or starting school without the energy they need to thrive. But these are symptoms, not the cause. Morning hunger doesn’t happen for just one reason. It’s caused by a mix of pressures, from national policy to local support systems and the challenges families face at home. If we want lasting change, we have to address the root causes and break the link between systems and the hunger children face each morning. This will improve children and young peoples’ lives far beyond breakfast. To find out how – read our full report! utm.guru/ume1i #ChildHunger #FoodInsecurity #ChildPoverty

A clear indication on the need for school breakfasts across the country. We are excited to see more schools join the national rollout of free school breakfasts for all primary aged children in England. But there is still a long way to go and we are here to support schools until every child in the UK is nourished, empowered, and thriving.
Good Morning Britain@GMB

Almost half of parents are deciding which primary school to send their child to, based on whether or not they offer free breakfast. More than 3.4 million households do not have enough money for food according to charities, and the government is now planning to extend its provision of free breakfast clubs. @NickDixonITV reports.

“Babies born today will grow up in a Scotland where school breakfast is as normal as publicly funded school lunch, prescriptions, or under-22 bus pass.” This week marks a major win for young Scots. We welcome the pledge of over £100 million to a national breakfast club programme between now and the end of the 2028/29 financial year. As we move towards the Scottish election later this year, we remain committed to working with all parties to offer a future where young Scots are nourished, empowered and thriving. Fantastic news in yesterday's budget, with £100m outlined in the spending review for breakfast clubs, and an additional £15m to expand and extend Bright Start Breakfasts next year - a programme already making a difference for children, young people and their families. We agree with @PovertyAlliance, this is progress to be celebrated, but there's more to do to end poverty in Scotland.

We're encouraged to see @EISUnion welcome the commitment to free breakfast clubs in every primary and special school announced in yesterday's Scottish Budget, and look forward to hearing from school staff and pupils as the programme rolls out. Every day, our partner schools tell us how much breakfast matters - improving behaviour, boosting engagement, and providing the fuel for learning that helps children and young people thrive.

Thanks to John Dickie, Director @CPAGScotland for highlighting both progress and gaps in yesterday's budget. We celebrate the boost to free breakfast clubs, which as @CPAGScotland notes are essential - but are only one piece of the puzzle. We join our @EndChildPoverty colleagues in looking ahead to the election and are ready to work together to ensure that every child and young person in Scotland is supported to thrive.

We’re delighted to welcome the significant investment of over £100 million in a national breakfast club programme announced by @scotgov today. This comes alongside the additional £15 million investment this year to deliver a breakfast club for every young Scot in primary and special schools by August 2027. At Magic Breakfast, we see every day how much of a difference having a school breakfast can make. When children and young people start the day nourished, they’re more settled, more engaged, and better able to make the most of their time at school. That’s why breakfast matters – and why #BreakfastCantWait. As the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government noted in her speech, this will deliver the “fuel for learning” vital for children and young people to be empowered and to develop to reach their full potential. This is a strong signal of the Scottish Government’s commitment to giving children and young people the best possible start to the school day and it is encouraging to see this build on the success of Bright Start Breakfasts. Magic Breakfast remains committed to working constructively with the Scottish Government, schools and partners to ensure every child in Scotland has the school breakfast they need to learn and thrive. As we move forward towards the Scottish election later this year, we hope all parties can welcome this investment in a future where children and young people from Carloway to Coldstream are nourished, empowered, and thriving. #ScotBudget #NourishingFutures

We warmly welcome the #ChildPovertyStrategy. We see the impact of poverty on children in our communities every day and this can only truly be tackled by addressing the root causes of poverty. It's encouraging to see the foundation for the future set out in this strategy and we urge the Government to act swiftly to deliver on their commitments made today to ensure a UK where every child is nourished, empowered, and thriving. 🚀 gov.uk/government/new…

The budget brings progress on free school breakfast provision, with more support for primary schools and some secondary schools in disadvantaged areas. But secondary-aged pupils with SEND in all-through special schools are still left out. Our new blog explains the changes, gap that remains and how to add your voice.
