City of Glasgow College lecturers from the welding and fabrication department took their first day of strike action today in a dispute over unsafe working and learning conditions. Lecturers and students are being exposed to welding fumes – which are known to be carcinogenic – without adequate health & safety measures being put in place. Where exposure exists, safety MUST exist✊

Q&A continues. Ms Bradley referred to the senior phase in schools, more needs to be done to encourage young people to stay on in education possibly by a change of culture giving more prominence to vocational subjects, and by less assessment.

Also wishes to incentivise young people to stay in education for as long as possible.

Ms Gilruth said that our education system in Scotland has not changed but our pupils have. Keen that education does not become weaponised in the future. We are asking education to do a lot & schools are now meeting more societal needs now compared to 20 years ago.

Ms Bradley; 'In a nutshell- spend on Education to save across multiple services otherwise in the future. We believe there’s a very high human, social & economic cost of ignoring that wisdom, so we urge our politicians locally & nationally not to ignore that wisdom.'

Andrea Bradley quoted IPPR reseach on EIS education policies: ‘Costs IPPR has estimated for implementing these policies are not insignificant, but international evidence suggests it is highly plausible that these would be outweighed by the benefits.’

Andrea Bradley said that the EIS believes that the working conditions of our teachers are the learning conditions of our pupils, and vice versa.

General Secretary Andrea Bradley responded to the Cabinet Secretary's comments on national education funding and local government spending on education by suggesting that better ringfencing of education funding is needed.

GenSec Andrea Bradley outlining  believes education is a quintessential social good: good for individual people; good for communities; good for our whole society, in the hear and now, and in the future.

Ms Gilruth outlining her education work in the Scottish Govt as focusing on; improving pupil attendance, looking at ways of improving ASN delivery, national action to address pupil behaviour and curriculm reform. Working with trade unions is important as we want the same things.
