A great paper to start with is journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/1…, which uses statistical physics to describe the shape of your ponytail, though not the length at which each strand will break. This paper won @goldlabUC an Ig Nobel prize. Maybe one of these prizes is in your future too!

Definitively amongst the grands that Philip quotes, here at 71 on a conference about liquids in 2002 on the Yangtze river, and still going strong. Household names in this generation got diluted by a massive expansion of the scientific communities.

@philipcball @MarkusDeserno For the sheer importance of his work, and for the importance of the scientists from his lignage, he would compare with say Sam Edwards (both for instance got the Boltzmann medal). Without the involvement in national science politics that Sir Sam had.

The world of Statistical Physics has lost a giant: Kurt Binder has passed away this Tuesday. He was not only an outstanding scientist but also a wonderful human, full of heart and humor, who touched the lives of so many of us. He will be dearly missed. Rest in Peace!
