Arne Slot unlucky tonight. Gave his team the best possible chance to win. Diamond in possession, direct play + packed the middle for second balls, man-to-man defensively. First half, nobody bar van Dijk executed. Second half, everyone did, but missed the final action. Injuries and conceding a low probability goal when Liverpool were on top sums up a large part of the season. But, over the course of two legs, Arne Slot and the players only have themselves to blame. In Paris, Slot’s back 3 was a mess. At Anfield, the tactics were spot on but the players only started to execute collectively for one half, but even at that the finishing touch was missing (49 touches in the opposition box, close to 2 xG, 20 shots… no goals). Now the focus has to be on securing Champions League football for next season. And doing so in a cohesive and balanced style which bodes well for the future. The performances and results matter a lot in the league. Liverpool need clarity ahead of the summer transfer window so they can attack next season with a genuine possibility of winning major titles.

@emilymadigan91 @IverHanrahanGP Agree Em. Doubt I'll watch later also. Last season my schedule was almost revolved around Liverpool playing. This season its the opposite. I say I probably watched us fully about 10 times this season. Ive no attachment to the players either.

From here, Liverpool exploited City's 4-2-4 in all sorts of different ways. Dropping a #6 into the first line to overload the front 2. Fullbacks high to cause the wingers issues. Extra man in the middle vs Rodri and Bernardo. Caused City all sorts of problems.

Liverpool got a lot of success against City in the first 35 minutes. All stemmed from their direct play and success on second balls. Two on the top line vs the back 4, expecting that the second ball will land in the middle. Wirtz tucked inside. 4v2 created vs Rodri & Bernardo.

The first 35 mins there was as good as anything we’ve produced under Slot this season. Two pivotal moments ; the Salah of old has that ball in the net before the defender has a chance to get in a block & the VVD of old does not rashly go through the back of the attacker. 😢
