I struggled at school. I struggled at work. I struggle with writing. I struggle with speaking publicly. I struggle with small talk. I am intimated by really smart people. Nothing has been easy for me. Yet, I welcome intentional struggles. Why, you may ask. That’s how I grow.

Today, I have the solemn responsibility to be the first president to formally apologize to Native peoples – Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Native Alaskan – for what happened during the Indian Boarding School era. It's long overdue.

It was the honor of my lifetime to travel with @POTUS to celebrate his first visit to Indian Country at the Gila River Indian Community today.

President Biden's formal apology is a historic first step towards justice and healing for Native peoples. The federal government has never apologized for what happened to Native children and acknowledged the impact boarding schools continue to have in our communities.

The Federal Indian Boarding School Era is one of the darkest chapters of American history. The trauma experienced in those institutions haunts our conscience to this very day. Today, I'm in Arizona to issue a long overdue presidential apology for this era – and speak to how my Administration has worked to invest in Indian Country and our relationships with Tribal Nations, advance Tribal sovereignty and self-determination, respect Native cultures, and protect Indigenous sacred sites. On my watch, we'll remain committed to ushering in a new era between our government and nation-to-nation relationships – one that is grounded in dignity and respect. We must remember our full history, even when it's painful. That's what great nations do. And we are a great nation.
