@AshwinRaman_ He’s basically had license to charge around winning the ball back given the team structure around him (deep block at West Ham, (mostly) back 3 with England). If he has to be disciplined + defend space instead of being a pure ball winner, it might not be a completely smooth move

@AshwinRaman_ Flip side is that he’s played virtually all his football in a double pivot in conservative, compact sides. If he’s shunted into playing as a lone 6 with a lot of space to cover in transition, he’s going to have a rough adjustment period for a while.

I usually think many DMs (like Kanté) are wrongly mischaracterised as 6s, but I dislike the idea of Rice playing as an 8 for Arsenal. His current role at West Ham has a lot to do with the lack of ball progression around him, and there's a general lack of other young top 6s rn.

@GraceOnFootball Plus ever since he binned off Ireland for England, it was clear he was going to prioritise his own prospects ahead of any sentiment (which is entirely fair), so everyone’s been prepared for him to go for ages.

@GraceOnFootball The fact he’s been so open about his support of Chelsea and because he wasn’t actually at the club as a kid (picked him up at 14 after he was released) meant there was never the same level of emotional attachment typical academy grads have, so no real sense of betrayal there.

West Ham fans: Rice can leave with his head held high, right? It's not going to turn ugly?
Arsenal Buzz@ArsenalBuzzCom

🗞️| @MiguelDelaney on Declan Rice and Arsenal: “There has been progress with Arsenal, although they are still some way apart from West Ham United as regards how the purchase is made. A fee is almost agreed, but West Ham want the payment to only be over two instalments.” [Reading the Game newsletter, @Independent, via HITC]

@AFHStewart A lot of it is chasing empty metrics they can present as evidence of ‘growth’. Stuff like user time spent on app (even if it’s caused by shit navigation/UX). That autoplay feature will be about bumping total plays/views rather than retention (or something that actually matters)

@GraceOnFootball It's so annoying listening to broadcasters whinge about VAR when they're entirely responsible for its existence. Pundits fixating on refereeing decisions, analysing them from every angle, using slow-mo etc - basically what VAR does now - created conditions where VAR was necessary

VAR means we have fewer refereeing mistakes than ever. We're truly living in a golden era of accurate refereeing decisions. And no one is happy about it.

I broadly agree with this, but what we'll probably get instead is a VAR system that uses AI to take the human error out completely, which will likely create new problems we can't even think of right now.
Sam Lee@SamLee

In sport (society) now everyone's looking for the tiniest infractions. The VAR mistake for the Brentford goal was described as horrendous & awful on MOTD, and given VAR should spot it, it was. But 10 years ago it would have barely been noticed and football was better for it

@Jon_Mackenzie It’s very frustrating. Ended up writing something this week because I’m bored of seeing people say that West Ham should stick with Moyes because they’ve gone onto Fbref and sorted the league table by xGDiff.

There are really people out there who think you can determine if a team are good or bad from the raw xG data alone. Stay safe out there kids!

@ViewFTTouchline The No-Nonsense roles could easily exist as Player Instructions on other defensive roles. BWM is arguably a bit redundant now given that everyone is a potential ball winner in aggressive pressing systems. Could slap PIs on other CM roles too if you wanted a designated ball winner

@YacheBerries Do the same thing with VGC info. Unlock it postgame, stick it in a dex page or have a database in game that’s there if you want to access it but completely optional Just seems silly to not funnel casual players into competitive if you want to extend your game’s life cycle

@YacheBerries You’re right, that’s the exact reason it’s not in there. And I understand it - it would ruin the artifice because you’d be hanging a big flashing sign that says “This is a game” But the IV checker arguably already does that.

I replayed Pokemon emerald recently and it has the perfect blend of single and double battles throughout the story, I lowkey want to make a video explaining why I think this and how GameFreak should take notes since VGC is the official battling format we need more double battles

Thoughts on Amoonguss in regards to their impact on competitive Pokémon particularly doubles? Do you think 100% guaranteed sleep, Redirection and Pollen Puff is too much and should see nerfs, or is it honest due to low speed, safety goggles and how passive it is by itself?

Considering the hype around players like Maddison, Grealish and Zaha, Robert Snodgrass has very similar stats in terms of goals and assists. We presume players like Lanzini, Fornals and Anderson would be better than Snodgrass but the facts don’t add up.

@SimonStanVO @TheHList @1MrLondon I have some sympathy for that, but don't think the absence of those players necessitates radical change in defensive shape or pressing style every week. Fredericks is obvs quicker but has similar benefits/flaws as our other right-sided defenders.

@TheHList @Mase159 @1MrLondon Also with Fredericks, Andersen, Antonio injured his options have changed virtually every week. And now with Soucek, they will again.

When I wrote this I think I really meant “there is no combination of players who can even compete in these games”. Massive credit to Moyes and the players for last night, then. I’d been fairly sure we would go down - definitely more hopeful now.
HeadHammerShark@TheHList

For what it’s worth, I don’t think there is any combination of players that Moyes can field who will win points at City or Liverpool, no matter how easy WHU Twitter seems to think that would be. We’re just a poor team. “But Palace got a point!”. Well, yes, they’re better than us.

@TheHList @1MrLondon I'd argue that Cresswell at CB doesn't work, Diop plays worse as part of a 3, and that chopping and changing the roles of his midfielders (Soucek/Noble/Snodgrass for Moyes; Anderson/Fornals/Lanzini for MP) game-to-game is a continuation of a major problem under Pellegrini.

@Mase159 @1MrLondon I think that’s a legitimate criticism, albeit if he sat on his hands and kept picking the same team and formation he’d be hammered for that too. I don’t think he’s playing players out of position though? That’s what I was referring to with my comment.

@vinnywhufc His 2 goals vs Brighton were massively deflected which inflates his numbers anyway, but I don't think that attacking contribution is worth the damage he causes to the team's shape when we don't have the ball. Causes more problems than he solves.

@Mase159 It was the goalkeeper that cost us last night. You say he makes the side worse yet his contribution in attacking areas is (surprisingly to me) as good as anyone in the league. Better than a Maddison or a Zaha.
