Great day at Tottenham yesterday, and thanks @GRDCNorth for the opportunity to present. For anybody interested, there’s also a new @theGRDC funded App developed by @CSIRO called ‘Summer weed tool’…worth checking out this summer.
GRDC North@GRDCNorth

Weeds are a red card for fallow management - @Master4Colin looks at the cost of uncontrolled weeds to system profit – a nitrogen & water story. #GRDCUpdates #Tottenham Paper: bit.ly/4fedVOf

@theGRDC Canola establishment field walk tomorrow at Canowindra. Time: 10am Location: Woodlands (refer to flyer) Rainout shelters have provided some great insights into dry sowing and the critical moist% required for establishment. Hope to see you there. @CSIRO @NSW_AGRONOMY

Be great to see you @theGRDC canola establishment field walk at Canowindra on Friday 13 June. Strong focus on the critical soil moisture requirements for est % & the various implications of stubble, seed depth, soil strength & seedbed moist dry-down. @CSIRO @NSW_AGRONOMY

Yr 2 of the Diverse Farms project has kicked off at Rannock. Comparing FbCW against FbCWB rotations. @MckinleyMatt sowing canola into faba stubbles despite only 57mm YTD rainfall. Surface dry but getting canola onto stored moisture from harvest. #diversefarms @theGRDC

Using shelters & irrigation to adjust seedbed moisture & to ensure dry conditions post sowing. Questions are: what’s the critical moist % to establish canola, & can seed be placed deeper if surface too dry? Really looking foward to these @theGRDC results👍@CSIRO @NSW_AGRONOMY

Is MAP fertiliser toxicity worse on wet or dry soils from a canola establishment perspective? Come along to tomorrow’s field day at Condobolin as we discuss the latest @theGRDC research into all things canola establishment. How to see you there. @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY @CSIRO

@davelangfield75 Agree David, Michael Nash was great on the pest side. Liked the way he explained the way our cropping systems contribute to slugs, millipedes etc & offered cultural as well as chemical control options. Although next time @Master4Colin get @PhilCranney to set BBQ up downwind 🤤

Great disc at Canola Establishment F-Day at Canowindra this morning - plenty of chat about disc vs tyne, estab pests like slugs, millipedes, slatters etc, fertiliser affect on canola seed, press wheels and closing wheel pressure - great work by Col McMaster NSW DPI $ by the GRDC

@brill_ag @theGRDC @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY @AgroJAK FYI - here’s some seed vigour tests that indicate that <1.6mm seed size was characterised with high levels of seed abnormalities and poor seed coat integrity (via EC test). Just like the field trials, most of the benefits came via selecting >1.8mm seed size

@brill_ag @theGRDC @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY @AgroJAK Sorry Rohan - late to the discussion. We observed similar findings with <1.6mm seed performing poorly at any depth. Interestingly, we found the >1.8mm seed size was relatively robust across both shallow and deep seeding depths…but agree the bigger the better.

2-2.2 mm seed sown 6 cm deep (L) versus <1.6 mm seed ~3.5 cm deep (R) @theGRDC Canola Establishment project, sodic soil at Ganmain. 3.5 cm depth has been no man’s land, not deep enough to hit moisture and too deep to for later rains. Splitting depths at sowing could be an option?
