Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?

@myfizzypop I really liked this record (and saw them on the Debbie tour). But I LOVE the second record. They switched labels and put out an EP but the full album release was canceled. I had an advance cassette and about wore it out. Found a Japanese CD a few years ago

Destroyer by @kiss was released 50 years ago. This beat up, well-loved album is the first record I ever bought (yes, this is the actual copy) & turned me into a lifelong music nerd. I still think it’s a fantastic record. And I keep buying copies. You’re welcome, @genesimmons

@RealThomasLogan You’re so much better than me Thomas Logan. You’re better looking, smarter, and your intellect is so much richer and more advanced than mine. I am inferior to you in every conceivable way and I’m so glad you called this my attention. Guide me, teach me, make us all better Thomas.

I finally got around to watching 28 Years Later and I enjoyed the return of the more experimental quality of the 1st film with this. The story was decidedly different than expectations, but it was overall solid. Also great to see representation for the huge dong crowd.

@batcountry1980 One of the most accurate depictions of what it was like to work in a record store I’ve ever seen

All these years later and Winter Soldier is still the best MCU film.

Happy 7th birthday to the album ‘Lightsleeper’ by Neil and Liam Finn! It’s not an album I’ve listened to much to be honest, but I’ll give it a spin later. Any stand out tracks?

My favorite record of the year so far (or at least of this month) is this nearly-forgotten 1973 Dionne Warwick album. Bacharach & David were (sadly) out, Holland, Dozier, & Holland were in. It’s soulful, cool, and auntie is singing her ass off on it.

Young me didn’t know a good Rolling Stones record from a bad one when this one came out 45 years ago. It’s probably upper mid-tier thanks to a few kick-ass jams, but it suffers by comparison to the records that came before and after it. But the title track? It was and is great

Next Heart…”Desire Walks On” from 1993. 1993 Ben was not listening to this album. "Will You Be There (In the Morning)" is the highlight (another Ann sung tune). I want to love the Dylan cover of “Ring The Bells” (w/ Layne Staley). It’s just ok. Anyone like this one?

@batcountry1980 Was working at a record store in ‘85. Tried to shock my old boss with this record. He loved it. Said it sounded like a noisy Beach Boys. My plan failed. I made a fan instead

🧵 “How about the Jesus and Mary Chain?” “They always seemed...” “They always seemed what? They always seemed really great is what they always seemed. They picked up where your precious Echo left off, and you're sitting around complaining about no more Echo albums. I can't believe you don't own this fucking record. That's insane. Jesus” It’s a great pitch from High Fidelity’s Barry, hawking Psychocandy like a true vinyl pusher. But, he is right, everyone should own this masterpiece. A feedback drenched fever dream, fusing Spector and scuzz, Stooges and Shangri-Las into a revolutionary record, conjured as if by dark magic. Self produced by the band, it took just seventeen grand and six weeks in a small London studio to make. No arduous layering, no endless tinkering. They just plug in and play, shaping distortion into melodic force with sonic sorcery, Bubblegum Pop you can choke on. It’s an album praised for its use of feedback, yet that praise doesn’t go far enough, for no band wields this power quite like them. It’s towering sound; Jim Reid’s laconic croon, the controlled chaos of brother William’s frantic guitar, Bobby Gillespie’s primitive drums beating like the bastard child of Hal Blaine and Mo Tucker, Douglas Hart’s bass a masterclass in minimalist menace, is the sound that launched a hundred sonic ships. But while others channel Psychocandy’s dynamic distortion into shimmering soundscapes or pulverising juggernauts of noise to much acclaim, its as dense as any of them, a mesmerising onslaught of sound, raw and untamed, striking a perfect balance of fury and melody. Indebted as much to The Beach Boys and Ronettes as the VU and Einstürzende Neubauten, this is distortion as hook, feedback as harmony, visceral, infectious songs that slip you a barbed wire kiss before knocking you out with a Glasgow one. Get yourself down Championship Vinyl and ask Barry for a copy.
