Sometimes I look at Bayo Onanuga and everyone that emits information from the Presidency and I can only imagine the kind of news that comes from the Presidency.
So, a video of Very Dark Man circulated yesterday. The video suggested that Tinubu made some certain sensitive comments about insecurity and the South East.
Mere looking at both the VDM video and listening to the alleged President Tinubu’s speech, you would have noticed that both were doctored. But somehow, people circulated it faster than necessary, with some inciteful comments that VDM should be dealt with.
That is not even my problem.
What unsettles me is the speed of light with which the Presidential Spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the recording of the President as fake, without also carrying out his due diligence to know that Very Dark Man’s video was also doctored.
How can a Presidential spokesperson be so quick to act on a sensitive issue like that without DSS clearance or any forensic investigation to ascertain the originality of the video? How can a journalist of his standards fall into such a trap because of lack of due diligence?
This should tell you the kind of diluted information we receive daily as Presidential news outlet. A Presidential spokesperson that does not carry out due diligence on a sensitive topic like this obviously does not bode well for Nigeria in other critical areas that need proper sensitization and accurate communication.
The scary part is that in a country already battling tension, insecurity and deep political distrust, one careless reaction from the Presidency can inflame an already charged atmosphere. That is why every statement from the Presidency should pass through serious verification before being thrown into the public space. But what we saw here was a rush to respond, without properly examining the full picture.
I do not even want to complain about the fact that you will go through Bayo’s page and might still not find him talking enough about the insecurity situation currently ravaging the Nigerian state.
Lol.
