Hyperion surrounded by conifer trees... Hidden within California’s Redwood National Park, Hyperion is the tallest known living tree on Earth, standing at approximately 379.7ft (115.7m). Discovered in 2006, this coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) continues to grow, adding small increments each year despite already towering above its surroundings. Hyperion’s exact location is kept secret to protect it from damage, as even foot traffic can harm the delicate root systems of redwoods. These trees thrive in the coastal climate, where frequent fog provides essential moisture, allowing them to reach extraordinary heights that no other species can match. Despite its height, Hyperion is not the oldest redwood—estimated to be between 600-800 years old, showing that extreme height and great age don’t always coincide in nature.
