“The only thing workers have to bargain with is their skill or their labor. Denied the right to withhold it as a last resort, they become powerless. A strike is therefore not a breakdown of collective bargaining-it is the indispensable cornerstone of that process.” ~ Paul Clark

Kirinyaga county will be in safe pair of hands
Ministry of Health@MOH_Kenya

Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, today led a public engagement forum under the Jamii Imara Mashinani initiative at Kiamutugu High School in Gichugu Sub-County, Kirinyaga County, where she sensitised residents on the rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA) and its role in advancing Universal Health Coverage. The PS outlined key benefits under SHA, including improved access to timely and quality health services, enhanced financial protection, and expanded coverage such as overseas treatment under the new health financing framework. The forum also provided an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to engage on broader government development priorities at the grassroots level. Updates were shared on ongoing projects, including affordable housing, ESP markets, road infrastructure, and irrigation initiatives aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and local economic growth. Discussions further addressed social concerns such as drug and substance abuse, while highlighting youth empowerment opportunities and investments in education infrastructure, including TVET development and improvements in local schools. The PS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening public participation and ensuring that health reforms and national development priorities translate into tangible benefits for communities at the grassroots.

Hon. George Peter Kaluma (Commentaries)
Our brothers and sisters from Western Kenya hold the most powerful positions in the current government; and we from Nyanza fully support them. But our brothers from Western Kenya persistently fight our sons holding the few positions held by people from Nyanza in National Government! It started with Mbadi whom they insisted couldn’t be appointed the Minister in charge of National Treasury “when they had better individuals for the position”! You have seen how Senators from Western Kenya treat him before the Senate. After the performance of Mbadi in the Treasury blunted them, all their venom is currently targetted at Dr. Ray Omollo not for doing any wrong but because he is Luo occupying a position a Luo should not hold in Kenya! Why should leaders from Western Kenya demand the removal of Ray after Osotsi is beaten by a fellow Luyha from Vihiga who found him in the company of a woman from Vihiga! Why should our brothers from Western Kenya bring their fights over their women to Kisumu then blame our sons! The relationship between Luyhas and Luos is the best in Kenya. Don’t let those few lost sons of Ingo who have become Gachagua’s disciples disrespect Luos. The good relationship between Luyhas and Luos is for mutual benefit and should be used to push for development across the region. It is time for Western and Nyanza to harness what they have, not to fight over nothing.

@AKUHNairobi in Kisumu ,it is bad manners to lie to patients that @_shakenya system is not working when you know very well that it is not true. If you feel that you can not see SHA patients, just exit the contract without subjecting patients to unnecessary suffering.

Can anyone clarify or give some more information on this; Kenya has only 150 psychiatrists serving a population of more than 50 million people, meaning each specialist caters to over half a million people. Any concrete data?

@wesstreeting Well, I'm a cancer patient and I support the strikes. I find your bashing of the Resident doctors and removal of training posts to be deeply spiteful & NOT at all in the interest of patients! I have resigned my Labour membership as a result. I'm so disappointed in Labour.

@wesstreeting Maybe the government should honor the agreement if they believe that patients are important.

The BMA think their demands are more important than patients. Unsurprisingly, patients don't agree. Patients deserve better. The BMA must call off these strikes.

I will ban resident doctors and consultants from going on strike – as we already do for the Police and Armed Forces. Labour has chosen the unions over patients. The @Conservatives choose patients, because only we are serious about getting Britain working again.

Today, doctors across the country are out taking strike action. This dispute is driven by an entirely avoidable crisis on jobs and pay. Right now, resident doctors are facing a real terms pay cut and growing unemployment. They need jobs and fair pay for the work they do. No one wants to strike. But without a credible offer on the table, doctors are left with no alternative.

Solidarity with doctors on strike today. They’re not asking for a pay rise. They’re asking for pay restoration after a decade of cuts. The government’s response? Take away vital training jobs, harming us all. Hardworking NHS staff will always have my full support!

A New Chapter for KMPDU: #Election Results & Leadership Transition The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) congratulates the newly elected National and Branch leaders following a successful democratic process, after the official announcement of results by the Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) yesterday. These leaders are the product of a robust constitutional process that the union has refined over time, reflecting the collective voice and vision of our members across the country. Our doctors have selected a team equipped to steer the union toward a future of progress, navigating the unpredictable tides of the healthcare sector with dedication and clarity. 🗳 Next Step | Ratification: To finalize this transition, the elects will be formally ratified during the Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) in May, marking their official entry into office and the start of their service to the medical fraternity. 🔗 Transparency & Verification: In line with our commitment to institutional integrity, the full breakdown of verifiable National and Branch results is now available for review on our portal: elections.kmpdu.org/results

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors should not have to beg for what has already been agreed upon. The Federal Government signed a deal on the Professional Allowance Table, and now it wants to abandon it. This is not governance; it is betrayal. Our resident doctors are the last line of defence in hospitals that are already collapsing. They work gruelling hours, in impossible conditions, for pay that insults their sacrifice. And now, the government seeks to take away the little that was promised? The Tinubu administration must demonstrate commitment to the issues: 19 months of unpaid Professional Allowance arrears; promotion arrears gathering dust; a Medical Residency Training Fund stuck in bureaucratic limbo; and a government that treats its doctors as an afterthought and remains unconcerned as they flee the country in droves. Every doctor Nigeria loses to the UK, Canada, or Saudi Arabia is a failure of leadership, not a failure of patriotism. You cannot ask people to serve a nation that refuses to honour its own word. I stand with NARD. Pay what you owe. Honour what you signed. Or explain to 200 million Nigerians why their hospitals will go dark on Tuesday. -AA
