Historically it was the East Syriac rite of Christianity that had the largest geographical stretch. It was spread across a vast territory stretching from Levant to Korea. Even many of the Mongol commanders of Genghis Khan belonged to this rite of Christianity. The rapid decline of East Syriac Christianity started with Timur (direct ancestor of Babur). Timur’s conquests in the Middle East during the late 1300s and early 1400s virtually decimated the East Syriacs. The survivors were forced to flee their historic intellectual and cultural centers in Mesopotamia and Persia, taking refuge as an isolated, persecuted minority in the rugged Hakkari mountains (in present-day southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq). Due to this geographic isolation, the East Syriac Patriarchate was unable to connect with other East Syriac Christian communities living outside Middle East, which led to the gradual collapse of those communities. Today only Mesapotamia and Kerala has a native East Syriac Christian community, just like other parts of the world, Kerala's East Syriac community was also once at the verge of a total collapse because the Catholicos Patriarch in Mesapotamia was unable to consecrate new Bishops for Kerala. In this context, it was 'Joseph the Indian', a native of Kodungallur in Kerala, who travelled all the way to Hormuz in 1490, and from there he travelled on land for 3 months and finally met the Catholicos in Northern Mesapotamia and got a new East Syriac Bishop consecrated for Kerala. This historic event led to the revivalism of East Syriac Christianity in Kerala. 10 years after this event, the same 'Joseph the Indian' travelled with the Portuguese to Europe and met Pope Alexander VI at Rome.
