@Christi58907541@ELchatFCPS#ELchatFCPS That is great. I think it could work for most contents but especially science and history. I might try it with a short story supported with pictures in a word bank for my Level 1s.
#ELchatFCPS I used a modified Shadow Reading with my advisory students of struggling readers. They practiced the text individually, asked me for vocabulary help, practiced with a partner and finally read it to me. Repetition helped immensely and they felt much better about it.
@ELchatFCPS The Picture Prompts on page 193 felt like a natural tie to science. I'd read a sentence about a review topic and they drew their understanding. It felt like a good check on student understanding. #ELchatFCPS
@MannonTracy@ELchatFCPS I agree. It is important within a class to realize students have such a range of listening skills that the scaffolding looks different for different students. It sometimes feels a little chaotic, but it works. #ELchatFCPS
@ELchatFCPS#ELchatFCPS Having studied abroad, I know the challenges of listening to what sometimes seemed to be just plain noise. Teachers need to scaffold listening activities through vocabulary support, visuals, etc., so students can make meaning from "noise" and become more confident.
#ELchatFCPS Partner reading is a great strategy to work on listening skills and students love reading to a friend. It incorporates so many valuable skills in one activity. When they discuss what they have read and they are clarifying understanding before writing in their logs.
I think shared reading is a great listening activity because students see the words and hear them at the same time. It allows them to access materials a little above their independent reading level and builds listening stamina. #ELchatFCPS
In my beginning ESOL class I start most days with students telling the class something they did or heard the day before. Students are interested in hearing from their peers. In this case listening is key because students often piggyback on what others say.
@cara_bremer@ELchatFCPS It was an interesting and important perspective and a challenging one because of the variety of needs within one class. It make guided reading groups pretty important to address all the student's needs. #ELchatFCPS
@AniaMikelinich@ELchatFCPS I agree that checking for background is important. Sometimes they surprise you with what they do or do not know! #ELchatFCPS
@ELchatFCPS Effective readers use their background knowledge. I always make sure and check with the students if they have any background. Couple days before I ask questions and then I have an idea what i should bring like objects or play videos.
#ELchatFCPS I hope those scaffolds will help engage students in a topic that is linguistically challenging because they have no experience with it and culturally out of their realm of experience. The conceptual challenge comes when they compare Alex to another character.
#ELchatFCPS To build background I am showing several short videos about Alex and the climbs he did. After they see the videos, we are having a discussion using sentences frames, then I have two levels of text I am using from Newsela to differentiate and make it accessible.
#ELchatFCPS During writing SOLs I am teaching a fun lesson on Alex Honnold the Free Solo climber. The goal is for students to think about persevering toward a goal, overcoming obstacles, etc. They don't have background on the subject so I have to build it first.
@cara_bremer@MannonTracy@kscrivESOL@ELchatFCPS I have the posters on my wall, but kids tend to overlook them, so I usually add them to the PPT or graphic organizer. I think I could do a better job of reminding them they are there. Just like a word wall, I need to draw it into instruction.#ELchatFCPS
Recently I had my students write to "nominate" a family member for a Family Achievement Award. They really got into it and were highly successful. They knew there was an audience (3 judges) and there was a prize for the winners. Stage 4 writing. #ELchatFCPS
@ejchild@ELchatFCPS#ELchatFCPS Eric, this is such a great real life purpose for writing. How cool if your students meet the people they wrote letters to when they come to Career Day. Mostly, I contrive a purpose for my students to write that may or may not resonate.
@ELchatFCPS We have a Career Day coming up in March, so I’m having my ELD students write to passionate, successful professionals to invite them to present at this event. I highlighted four people we could contact, and modeled a letter to one, focusing on the parts of the letter. #elchatfcps
@ELchatFCPS Worked with the Government teacher to write a reflection. She provided a model so in my class we talked about the purpose and I provided sentences frames so students could write independently. Had also discussed possible responses.
#ELchatFCPS Stage 3 We write together or they take apart something I have written and identify parts. Stage 4: Write on their own or with a partner. We did this numerous times with persuasive writing. It is such an important kind of writing, but requires extensive practice.
I am using the 4 stages of writing quite extensively this year and I think the results are positive. Stage 1. WE read something together and talk about it. Stage 2: We introduce the genre via a graphic organizer or visual and dissect what we read. #ELchatFCPS
