Growing up and through my career, I’ve witnessed the resilience and determination of women who held families, governments, and communities together, often in the face of great challenges. Their strength continues to inspire us all to advancing women’s leadership across the region. Through initiatives such as the IGAD Women Forums on Peace, Agriculture, Digital Security and Artificial Intelligence, and Land Governance, alongside the IGAD Gender Strategy, we continue to expand opportunities and elevate women’s voices across the IGAD region. On this International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to a future where women lead and thrive.

Participated in the AU Ad Hoc High-Level Committee on South Sudan C5 to review the current situation and reinforce collective efforts toward stability. IGAD remains committed to supporting lasting peace and progress in the Republic of South Sudan for the benefit of its people.

Joined Africa Heads of State and Government for the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa. As this year’s focus turns to water, one of our continent’s most vital and strategic resources, we are reminded that the Africa we want will not be shaped by declarations alone, but by the determined action of African countries, the African people both public and private sector, and African leaders. This is not the sovereign responsibility of one nation or of leaders alone. It is our collective African duty. Together, through shared resolve and united purpose, we must strengthen our cooperation and transform our potential into lasting prosperity for generations to come.

On the margins of the AU Summit, I met H.E. Dr @GHessebon, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, to exchange views on regional peace and security and key institutional priorities. We underscored the value of sustained diplomacy and a cohesive regional voice. IGAD remains committed to working with all Member States to advance peace, stability, and regional integration.

As I hand over the Chairmanship of the Inter-REC Coordination Platform, I do so with pride in the progress achieved over the past year under IGAD’s leadership. Working closely with the CEOs of our Regional Economic Communities, we strengthened AU-REC coordination and deepened inter-REC solidarity in advancing our shared continental priorities. With SADC’s commendable experience in economic integration and peacebuilding, I am confident the momentum will continue. Congratulations and best wishes, my brother H.E. @EliasMagosi.

Received Mr. Nick Checker, Senior Bureau Official, U.S. Department of State, Bureau of African Affairs, for an exchange on matters of mutual interest. We discussed strengthening cooperation on regional peace and security and reaffirmed our shared commitment to coordinated action in advancing stability across the region.

Following the resumption of the Republic of the Sudan to IGAD, I received H.E. Mohi El-Din Salem, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Sudan. We discussed the peace and security situation in the Sudan and the importance of sustained regional cooperation. I welcomed H.E. the Minister to the IGAD Council of Ministers, a key policy organ of the organisation. IGAD remains steadfast in its support for efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the Sudan and across the region.

The future of Africa will be shaped not by the resources we possess, but by how we govern and share them. Water sits at the centre of that responsibility. Today, I joined Africa’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs at the opening of the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, advancing the 2026 Theme of the Year on sustainable water availability and safe sanitation. As IGAD, we stand firm: access to water must not depend on geography or income, but on leadership, cooperation, and collective responsibility.

Today I Received letter of credential from H.E. Nicolas Simard, Canada’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Djibouti, and IGAD, during which we engaged on matters of mutual interest, including advancing peace and security across the region and strengthening the IGAD–Canada partnership, particularly on the Women, Peace, and Security agenda.

Following the ratification of the IGAD Treaty by the Federal Republic of Somalia, I received H.E. Mr. Salad Ali Guelleh, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Djibouti and accredited to IGAD. We engaged on issues of mutual interest and reaffirmed our shared commitment to further strengthening cooperation within the IGAD region.

Today, I’m celebrating my PhD graduation. It has been a long and challenging journey, filled with moments of doubt, growth, and perseverance, but also deeply rewarding. I’m truly grateful to everyone who supported and believed in me along the way. Alhamdulillah for making it to the finish line.

Today in Djibouti, I received the newly appointed Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Djibouti, H.E. @lapirenne, who presented her Letter of Accreditation to IGAD. Our discussions reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in advancing peace, enhancing resilience, and promoting regional integration across the IGAD region.

As we welcome a new year, we do so with renewed hope and shared purpose in our collective strength as a region. The past year tested us in many ways conflict, climate shocks, economic pressures yet it also revealed the resilience of our people and the enduring power of regional solidarity. In the year ahead, IGAD remains firmly committed to advancing peace, strengthening resilience and amplifying the voices of women and youth who are shaping the region’s future. Together with our Member States and partners, we will continue to work for a region that is more secure inclusive and hope for all. May the year ahead bring peace to our region and dignity to our people . Happy New Year!

Busy week @IGADsecretariat where I participated at high-level events-#IGAD Reg’l strategy (2026-30) validated, budget endorsed by Committee of Ambassadors, & concluded with senior management mtg setting direction for sustained & effective support to #IGAD MS in the years ahead.⏩

Today we had Convened with the IGAD Committee of Ambassadors in Djibouti City, where the IGAD Strategy 2026–2030 was formally validated—an important milestone that sets our shared direction for the years ahead. The Committee also adopted the IGAD budget for 2026, reinforcing the organisation’s capacity to deliver on this new strategic vision. I extend my sincere appreciation to Member States for their continued commitment and confidence in IGAD. Their steadfast support remains the foundation of our collective progress and our ambition for a more peaceful, integrated, and resilient region.
