Technically, Iran has no legal basis to charge fees or close the Strait.
Egypt's right to charge tolls for the Suez Canal is part of the 1888 Constantinople Convention, which also guarantees freedom of navigation for all nations.
Egypt was granted ownership and sovereignty of the Suez Canal by the United Nations.
The Strait of Hormuz is a natural international strait, not a man-made canal like the Suez.
Under UN convention, all ships have an unconditional right of transit passage through the Strait.
Most importantly, the Suez has an alternative - going around Africa, albeit a longer route. The Strait of Hormuz has limited alternatives, as we have quickly found out.

I still think the IRGC incentives are to drag this out as far as they can, and the only way it can be controlled is by a naval blockade or true threat to bomb out its oil and gas infrastructure (blockade is a much better point)
In the meantime the Middle East should arm up - as well as US and Israel using this time to significantly increase the interceptor and munitions capacity as well as build forces to seriously address sea mines as well as deteriorate any ability to hold the strait hostage

Biden opened the border from 2021 to 2025.
The Venezuelan illegal alien who killed Sheridan Gorman came across that border in May of 2023, was apprehended and released into the country by CBP under Biden.
He was arrested AGAIN in June of 2023 in Chicago for shoplifting but was released thanks to Democrats' pro-crime/sanctuary city policies...
But somehow, according to Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Sheridan Gorman's death is TRUMP'S FAULT?
