@_AndrewTucker Congrats, Andrew. My prayer for you will be that you are able to experience your defense as a celebration of the hard work you have done.

@henryjkwallis @freganmitts Caring for others, like children, does indeed strike me as the most important kind of work one can engage in. What kind of work would you say is more important?

@freganmitts the picture shows a mom, dad, and their kid. It's clearly intended to mean that bearing and raising children is the most important work.

In a group chat with some bioethicists talking about a recent book that just came out, and let me just say: academics are capable of a special kind of trash talk.

I’m the CEO of a hot dog company. I’ve worked on hot dogs for 10 years. And *I* wasn’t prepared for what I’ve just seen. Your life is about to change. So what can you do? Buy as many hot dogs as you can. Buy stock in hot dog companies.

I’m sure there will be no long term consequences of a private equity takeover 🙄 The bright side is: we can finally abandon the idea that student education is fundamentally at the heart of (at least Utah’s) university athletics programs.
Ross Dellenger@RossDellenger

In a groundbreaking endeavor, the University of Utah athletics is entering into what could be a $500M+ equity partnership with Otro Capital featuring the creation and shared ownership of a for-profit entity to operate athletics, sources tell @YahooSports. bit.ly/44hUcZJ

The more time students spend on screens, the less they learn. Ed tech does not belong in schools (until it is thoroughly tested & proven to help). Excerpt from Jared Cooney Horvath's excellent new book, The Digital Delusion, in @TheFP thefp.com/p/we-gave-stud…

The most dangerous addiction today isn't a substance. Research on 100,000 people confirms that heavy short-form video use is just voluntary cognitive decline. We are actively training our brains to fail at hard tasks. If you can simply sit with a problem for 10 minutes without swiping, you have a massive competitive advantage. Basically, boredom is the new IQ.

@SpeedWatkins Without defining the term "God" such arguments are meaningless. If you equate "God" with Consciousness, then it is immediately that there is ONLY "God."

@heidiklessigmd @parvizbd Whether the distinction exists in reality depends, crucially, on whether I’m right. If I am, then it does indeed exist in reality.

@heidiklessigmd @parvizbd This of course assumes the brain dead “person” is indeed a person—the very issue at debate. Also, the brain dead person does not do all I do, such as regulate their own breathing and heartbeat, among other things.

“It only took me 7 months to go from Brain Dead to my first 5k — keep up!” Courtnie Bush was declared brain dead after a motor vehicle accident in 2020. She was comatose for 22 days before awakening and giving her mother a thumbs up. “Seven months after I was pronounced brain dead, I ran a 5k in 46 minutes,” said Bush. Her determination and drive allowed her to return to sports, graduate from high school with her twin brother, and head off to college. Death is an irreversible state. “Brain death” has been shown to be reversible and is not true death.
