Researchers at the University of Galway have revealed the results of a world-first study into how bowel cancer shuts down the immune system, and how this can be reversed to improve treatment. 🧬 Professor in Tumour Immunology at @galwaycmnhs Aideen Ryan, stated that unlike in melanoma and lung cancer, immunotherapy has had limited success in treating bowel cancer, leaving advanced-stage patients with few options and poor survival rates. The breakthrough research discovery is the first to demonstrate that tumour stromal cells, which support cancer growth, are directly reprogramming the immune system. 🧫 These cells are coated in sialoglycans that bind to Siglec receptors on immune cells, switching off the body’s natural defences and making immunotherapy ineffective. Presented today at #ECI2024 on developing a 3D model to assess stromal mediated effects on T cells in the CRC TME.Enjoyed great discussions about my project.Very greatful to have received a travel grant from @EFIS_Immunology/ @EurJImmunol. Looking forward to the talks tomorrow!

Had a great day on Wednesday attending the @GalwayCMNHS research day. Was very motivational hearing about the research taking place through the college. Grateful to have received an award for the best rapid fire oral presentation.
