In contrast to me, Prof Kennedy is a brilliant oncologist, who was one of the early founders of the specialty in Ireland. Prof Kennedy chaired the current national cancer strategy (gov.ie/en/department-…), which expires this year. The government @roinnslainte is under no obligation to develop a new cancer strategy, but I think it is clearly the right thing to do. The minister has agreed in principle to developing a new strategy. Also in contrast to me, I happen to know Prof Kennedy is a bibliophile; he uses words sparingly, and very precisely, only when something is specifically worth saying. About Prof Kennedy: In challenging clinical situations, he will always take your call, and will give solid clinical advice every time. Monday, Wednesday, Friday 2pm ward rounds, like a clock. He checked in not only with cancer patients, also with the staff, every day. Between 4 and 5pm, my best chance of finding him if I needed him would be to go to the dayward, where every day he would go deliberately, to check if things were ok. If something was not ok, he would drop everything, go straight to the CEOs office, and insist on a solution. The CEO listened. Most of the weekends I was on call, I found him in his office on Saturdays, unpaid, finishing off the week’s responsibilities. I honestly do not mind if policy makers or resource allocators do not want to listen to me, but at least listen to John. He is a leader in the field.
