Your annual Lag BaOmer songs reminder: “Elo-KEE” – Doesn’t rhyme so well with “Yochai”, but isn’t kefira “Elo-KAI” – Rhymes perfectly with “Yochai”, but is absolute kefira.

@HAHazony My Hebrew professor in college had a poster on his door of what the woman would look like, taking every metaphor & analogy literally.

@VermonteSekida @dannycantalk This is such an awful worldview to have. Why are you assuming the worst in people? i'd press red because i want to live. I don't want you to die, but you all made that decision by pressing blue

For red pressers: The test is over. Red button won. You don't know by how much. You are randomly selected to get one last chance to save everyone. If you press the red button again, nothing changes. If you press the blue button, only you die and everyone else lives.

Conclusion In short, having someone else read the Torah for you misses the entire point. We’re all supposed to take turns reading the Torah in front of everyone: the entire community studying and teaching at the same time. The current practice has lost all its meaning and feels almost pointless. We need to bring back the institution of proper Torah-reading on Shabbath. This requires that people be educated to do so normally, not just for their “bar-mitzvah” (which is really too old already). It would also help if we switched to the triennial cycle, so that portions are much smaller. I would also add that, while the accent system is awesome, we shouldn’t stigmatize anyone who reads well but without proper accents.

⁦Is the institution of בעל קִריה valid? ⁦Nowadays, being called to the Torah generally means that you recite two blessings but someone else reads the Torah as your proxy. You basically do nothing—yet everyone congratulates you! I was recently asked on here about this. I’ve also been meaning to write about it for a while, as it gets to the core of what public Torah-reading is all about. This thread is essentially my responsum.

@Micha_Siegel @jewishmemequeen R' Sherira gaon used the word "shmad" to explain why they died, which means persecution. Honestly, I probably shouldn't have stated it as a given, but I do believe it.

@Micha_Siegel @jewishmemequeen I can't say that it's 100% fact, but the evidence points to it. R' Akiva supported bar kochba. Only makes sense that the thousands of his students dying around the time of the revolt were due to that. Could be they died in battle because of reasons given by chazal
