Today @HakiKNCHR launched the Public Inquiry report “Voices from the Land: Where Businesses and Investments Impact on Traditions, Culture and Human Rights” in Nakuru. The report documents how business operations are impacting the rights of Indigenous Peoples across 13 counties and sets out clear actions for State and non State actors. The full report is now available on our website: knchr.org/Portals/0/KNCH… In her remarks, KNCHR Chairperson, Claris Ogangah pointed out that this report must not “sit on the shelf”, making it clear that the Commission will actively pursue its implementation. KNCHR will engage relevant institutions and business actors to secure concrete, time bound steps to protect and promote the rights of Indigenous communities across Kenya. The Inquiry heard from communities including the Ogiek, Sengwer, Endorois, Ilchamus, Maasai, Turkana, Rendille, Boni, Aweer, Wailwana, Yaaku among others. The communities raised concerns about land loss, fenced off sacred sites, environmental degradation, labour abuses and increased SGBV around projects such as wind and geothermal plants, conservancies and ranches, large scale agriculture, ports and transport corridors.
