What does justice mean when budgets do not match the law? Morocco has made legal commitments to gender equality, but as Khadija Errebah of Democratic Association of Women of Morocco (ADFM) shows, rights on paper do not fund childcare, protect women from violence, or keep girls in school. For CSW70, we are bringing the budget conversation into the justice conversation. @UN_Women and @OpenBudgets are convening a high level roundtable: Financing Women’s Access to Justice: Closing Gaps, Scaling Solutions on Tuesday, 10 March, 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm at UN Women HQ, Daily News Building, CR1924 (19th floor). For millions of women and girls, justice is still out of reach not because laws do not exist, but because budgets do not back them up. This roundtable will look past legal promises to the fiscal realities that decide what actually gets delivered. We will dig into: ✅ Why discriminatory laws and structural barriers persist, and what they mean for real access to justice ✅ How budgets, fiscal transparency, and accountability can make justice systems work for women and girls ✅ How austerity and debt are widening justice gaps, and what it will take to treat justice as a properly financed public good ✅ Concrete, measurable, time bound commitments aligned with CSW70 agreed conclusions, plus clear next steps for follow up, monitoring, and peer learning Speakers include representatives from the governments of Nigeria, India, and Malawi, alongside IBP and Girls Not Brides. Mama Oyo’s journey is proof that when women understand the budget, they can change what the budget delivers. Roseline Atinuke Akinbade, known as Mama Oyo, joined @swofon in 2016 and learned that Nigeria’s agriculture budget could work for smallholder women farmers too. Through IBP’s SPARK program, @swofon uncovered a huge gap: women do about 75% of Nigeria’s food processing, yet receive almost none of the agriculture funding. With the data in hand, Mama Oyo took the conversation straight to the Oyo State Ministry of Agriculture and built a working partnership with Abimbola Agbaje, Head of Women in Agriculture. The result: in 2024, agriculture funds reached smallholder women farmers in Oyo State for the first time, providing tools, equipment, and training to thousands of women who feed Nigeria. This is what budget transparency looks like in real life: not just a seat at the table, but real influence and real results.

7/ Next milestone: on 1 April 2026, IBP will release the 2025 Open Budget Survey results for the MENA region. The findings will offer fresh insight into Lebanon’s progress on budget openness and transparency.

Lebanon cannot rebuild public trust without a clear path to open government. That is the point of the work. Last week, our partner @TI_Lebanon convened CSOs for a roundtable hosted by the @OmsarGov (OMSAR): “Towards an Open Government Roadmap in Lebanon.”
