▶️ She was told to take her banner down. Watch what happened next. Shama'u was told she owed ₦34,000 in taxes every month. The real amount? ₦2,000. That's what happens when systems are designed to confuse, not inform. Through a reform effort convened by @OpenBudgets and its partners - @Followtaxes @ANWBNetwork_ and @cislacnigeria, women in Kano got answers — and the confidence to participate in the systems that shape their lives. Her banner is back up. 🪧 #TaxJustice #WomenInBusiness #Nigeria #Kano

What happens when young people understand the budget? In Jordan, youth advocates trained in fiscal literacy moved from broad demands to evidence-based calls for education investment — and got heard. This is the kind of story we'll be amplifying at our #OBS2025 MENA Regional Launch on 20 May. From Rabat to #OpenGovWeek 🌍 As the African Open Government Conference wrapped up yesterday, conversations continue on how to strengthen transparency, participation, and accountability across the globe and how partnerships can turn commitments into real change for people. In this reflection, Djibril Badiane, Program Manager at IBP Senegal shares why public budgets matter beyond numbers: they shape people’s rights, services, and everyday lives. Through tools like the Open Budget Survey, governments and civil society can better measure and advance budget transparency, participation, and accountability. As we look ahead to #OpenGovWeek (May 18–22), we’re excited to continue working with open government reformers, activists, public servants, civil society, the private sector, and citizens around the world to build more open and accountable public budgets and tax systems together. 🤝 Let’s turn participation into impact. Let’s work together. #OpenGovernment #OGP #BudgetTransparency #FiscalTransparency #OpenBudgets #CitizenParticipation #Accountability #Africa #FrancophoneAfrica

Representing IBP were Emad Emam and Djibril Badiane, who participated in panels and partner meetings focused on strengthening budget transparency and supporting stronger @opengovpart action plans across Africa. From Benin to Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, DRC to Morocco, the discussions highlighted growing momentum for more transparent, inclusive, and accountable public finance systems in the region. 🌍 What could stronger citizen participation in budgeting look like in your community? #OpenGovernment #FiscalOpenness #BudgetTransparency #CitizenParticipation #ParticipatoryBudgeting #OGP #OpenBudgets #Africa #Governance

Evidence from Morocco, Senegal, South Africa & Indonesia shows what's possible when GRB is embedded in fiscal architecture — not treated as a donor-funded add-on. 5/6
