There presumably has been a stupider government running a major power during past times, but can someone point me in the direction of when it might have been?

It is time to open a path towards de-escalation in order to restore stability in the Middle East. France calls for the immediate implementation of a moratorium on strikes targeting civilian infrastructure, whether related to water or to energy. Freedom and security of navigation must be restored. As the region enters a period of religious celebrations and renewal, tempers must cool and hostilities must cease, in order to give a real chance to the prospect of a negotiated and sustainable solution.

💥Punchy remarks from @AngelaRayner at Mainstream event tonight, esp given she is viewed as front runner in any Labour leadership contest: - she warns Keir Starmer he “cannot just go through motions” in face of decline - and that govt is “running out of time” to show it can deliver change people need. - a nod to disgruntled MPs when she says they need to “rebuild this party” as well as the country. - says it’s “un-British” to move the goalposts on indefinite leave to remain - puts her at odds with govt’s key immigration policy. - attacks Reform who she says are “twisting our flags” into symbols of division - and says they’re on side of the people who rigged the system.

A Sunday investigation reports that Richard Tice’s company obtained REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) status. That allowed the company to avoid corporation tax on rental profits as long as dividends were paid out. Legal? Yes. But it shows how wealth can structure itself to minimise tax. 🧵

@PippaCrerar I think this mis-frames the discussion. The issue is being explored as part of a broader and more ambitious reset of UK/EU relations. Reeves's Mais lecture on Tues will lean into that

NEW: Britain in standoff with Brussels over demand to cut university tuition fees for European students, with row threatening to scupper Keir Starmer’s planned EU reset. EU officials say European students should pay “home” fees of about £9,500 a year as part of youth mobility scheme, rather the higher international rate, which can rise above £60,000. But British negotiators have been blindsided by the demand, which they say was not mentioned in framework agreement signed last year and would cost British universities around £140m a year. Sources say the disagreement has brought talks to a near standstill with just three months left before summit in Brussels in late June or early July. @kiranstacey reports 👇 theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

@Femi_sorry Great question for Reeves: A majority of people is in favour of rejoining the EU. Nick Thomas–Symonds has said flat-out that this will not happen under Labour (while he lives). Which party does Reeves recommend that they vote for?

@DavidHenigUK I am constantly reminded just how inspired Barnier's step diagram was .. simple, clear, discrete. Blunt. Choose the [step of the] rights you would like, read off the responsibilities that go with it. Some combinations of rights(benefits)/ responsibilities(costs) do not exist.

Important NB on reports the UK government hopes to have an SPS agreement with the EU very soon - the actual agreement is a framework which is unlikely to have the full detail, the important part is the implementation via the joint committee - and the timescales for this

For all the excitement around Rachel Reeves talking about the EU, this government's position hasn't changed, this current package of negotiations is mostly the limit given Brussels isn't overly tempted to offer much more. independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…

@McKayEli and "that's nothing like queue management"? I think that it was the Sainte-Chapelle queue that ran past frequent QR codes to book a timed slot, some available immediately, ie click the QR code, and walk to the front of the queue.
