@StefanMolyneux I mean nothing secret about what he wanted, it's public material, it's the lack of pushback or call out that's surprising but then again I guess labels are more hurtful than cultural collapse

A brief note re the Bodog brand no longer being associated with online gaming. I'm turning 65 this year, and as I start to slow down, I want my brands to do likewise. For those of you interested in where this all started, here's a little history. My online gaming career started as a technology provider to other firms, so when it came time to launch my own site, I had plenty of front-row experience as to what I didn’t want to do. All my clients’ brands included the words ‘gambling,’ ‘bet’ or ‘sports,’ but I had ambitions that went far beyond gaming. My inspiration came from Richard Branson’s Virgin, originally a record store/label that eventually branched out to numerous unrelated sectors. ‘Virgin’ wasn’t wedded to a specific sector, so all Branson had to do was add the appropriate suffix to fit whatever new business he entered (soft drinks, airlines, mobile phones, and yes, online gaming). I wanted that same flexibility but also a name that would stand out from the crowd. I wrote a 14-point checklist of features my company name had to have: short (six letters or less), visual symmetry (if you look at the Bodog typeface, it’s all circles and vertical lines), the idea that if you read it you’d know how to pronounce it and if you heard it you’d know how to spell it, etc. But I also wanted it to be memorable, to have a certain stickiness, something that would make people ask each other: what’s a Bodog? It was also, like Virgin, a blank slate onto which I could project whatever pictures I wanted. After coming up with a bunch of names that met this criteria, I sat down at the computer one night and checked if domain names had already been registered. Of the names that cleared this hurdle, Bodog was the one that leaped off the page. I was pretty much the only member of my early team who was enthusiastic about the name. It was like Reservoir Dogs, where nobody wanted to be Mr. Pink. They all wanted to know what the hell Bodog meant. I told them ‘nothing… yet.’ The rest, as they say, is history. Name me a brand that started from less and built itself into more.

I recently received a message from a young entrepreneur seeking my views on the investors’ mindset. He said his sports/health business has been up and running for a few years and profitable from the get-go, so it doesn’t really seem like he needs my advice, but here goes nothing. In terms of how I evaluate opportunities: it can be as simple as asking, is there a problem that needs fixing, a process that needs streamlining, a need going unmet? Is the cost of providing this solution reasonable? How many others are trying to fix the same problem? Do they have a head start, greater resources, or an inside track not available to you? Weighing risk v return: Risk will always be there. The question becomes whether you consider it an acceptable risk and whether you’re prepared to take that risk. It’s easier to take a great risk early on when you’ve got little to lose and (possibly) everything to gain. You also don’t yet know enough to be scared, which can be good or bad. Long-term value creation: does the opportunity you’re pursuing have the capacity to extend its own runway, or is it a quick patch that’s likely to be superseded by other, better solutions? Can you look ahead to see where this sector is going and identify ways to stay ahead of that curve? In the end, the path you choose will be a mix of rational analysis and gut instinct. But there’s no real way to know if your bet will pay off. Unknown unknowns are a phenomenon in all walks of life and can kill any effort, regardless of how good it looks on paper or how hard you work. I’ve taken leaps that have paid off handsomely. Other leaps left me free falling and wondering why I hadn’t realized how high up that cliff really was. But failure can be a good teacher, and I always say I am where I am today because I’ve made more right decisions than wrong ones. Not everyone has the ambition to become an entrepreneur. Among this group, only a handful will be able to correctly identify possibilities. Fewer still will be willing to make the sacrifices to turn those possibilities into reality. Even if you have all those qualities, success is never assured. So good luck.

For many kids, the most desired Christmas presents are flashy digital gear that earns them status points with their peers. But these gifts are often ephemeral, forgettable, simple carbs for the brain. Many families are struggling financially, but great gifts don’t have to come with hefty price tags. Simple gifts are often the ones that kids will remember best because the impact on their lives was long and profound. One of the best gifts any parent can give their kid is time. The simple act of dedicating time to spend together where the focus is solely on them. Some new experience that offers bonding moments that will linger in the mind long after. Buy a pair of used skates for your kid and block off a regular portion of the week for visits to the public rink to teach them how to skate, catch them when they fall, see the pride on their faces when they realize they can do it on their own. Same with teaching them how to ride a bike. These types of gifts are enduring, giving kids confidence in their achievements, to the point that they get the urge to try new things they might have otherwise avoided without those early successes with an attentive parent at their side. Acts like this require both of you to put the phones down and learn a little more about each other. I’ve forgotten many of the presents I got as a kid but I’ll never forget going hunting/fishing with my dad, having the conversations fathers and sons have while surrounded by nature’s quiet beauty. Time is a resource you can’t ever get back. Spend it on those you care about.

@StefanMolyneux Is violence also immoral for boxers, mma or the masochist? Socialism goes against the non-aggression principle, as pointed out by Ayn Rand half century ago that's why it doesn't work. Very important distinction imo

@CalvinAyre Funny another tourist told me it wasn't swimmable and to avoid, I did check out boracay and loved it's warm water beaches. Will have to check out Taal lake when I go back next month, do you remember the company that offers wake boarding?

Most tourists never travel beyond the cities where their airplanes land. To me, getting off the beaten path is the whole point of travel, and the places you discover can become places you never leave. These are some shots of Taal Lake and its active volcano, half an hour south of Manila. I first visited over a decade ago and had such a blast wakeboarding that I built a home here. These shots are from the hills overlooking the lake but my place is right on the water. In Tagalog, Taal means pure/genuine. From its black volcanic sand to its lush green surrounding forested hills, things don’t get much more pure. Next time you’re in the PH, take a detour outside Manila and book a paddle boat tour of the lake. Just watch out for my wakeboard.
