Twierdzenia Prezydenta Ukrainy Wołodymyra Zełenskiego, że Prezydent RP Karol Nawrocki nie chciał z nim rozmawiać, by wyjaśnić sprawę nadania jednostce wojskowej imienia „bohaterów” UPA nie znajdują pokrycia w faktach. Najpierw strona ukraińska proponowała rozmowę telefoniczną obu prezydentów. Ostatecznie, nie doszło do niej z powodu braku reakcji Prezydenta Zełenskiego. Ze strony współpracowników Prezydenta Ukrainy pojawiła się także propozycja spotkania obu prezydentów. Ustalono datę i godzinę. Nie doszło do niego, bo ze spotkania zrezygnował Prezydent Wołodymyr Zełenski. To oznacza, że ze strony władz Ukrainy nie było gotowości do zmiany nazwy jednostki wojskowej noszącej imię zbrodniarzy spod znaku UPA. Była wyłącznie gra na czas. Tyle fakty.

Strona ukraińska miała pełną świadomość tego, że próby gloryfikacji zbrodniarzy spod znaku UPA spotkają się z adekwatną reakcją strony polskiej. Prezydent Wołodymyr Zełenski miał pełnię możliwości wycofania się ze swojej złej decyzji. W ostatnich tygodniach prowadzony był aktywny dialog z Kijowem. O taki dialog i czas wnosiła strona ukraińska. Spotkało się to z naszą otwartością. Niestety, nie przyniósł on zmiany podejścia władz Ukrainy do kwestii nazwania jednej z jednostek wojskowych imieniem tzw. „bohaterów” UPA. Dialog w dyplomacji ma sens, ale tylko wtedy, gdy ma prowadzić do pozytywnych rezultatów i tylko wtedy, gdy dwie strony są tym zainteresowane. Dialog jako gra na czas powinien zostać ukrócony. I tak też było w tym przypadku. Polska nie będzie zamykać oczu na gloryfikację zbrodniczej organizacji. Tysiące niewinnych ofiar ludobójstwa wołyńskiego nie zostaną nigdy zapomniane. Nigdy też nie będzie zgody na gloryfikację ideologów i wykonawców tego ludobójstwa.

Some are asking why now. Why is Ukraine renaming military units in honor of UPA heroes? Why is President Zelenskyy elevating them at this moment? The answer is simple. There is no better moment than now. The UPA – the Ukrainian Insurgent Army – fought for the same thing Ukraine is fighting for today. Independence. Survival. The right of a Ukrainian state to exist. They fought Nazi Germany. They fought Soviet russia. Some of them fought against Polish occupation, because parts of Ukraine had been under Polish rule for centuries before 1939. Despite all odds, they fought because the alternative was annihilation. Eighty years later, Ukraine is fighting that same war against the same enemy, with the same alternative. Russian missiles are killing Ukrainian civilians tonight. Russian forces are trying to erase Ukrainian existence as a nation. Ukrainian soldiers are dying every day in a struggle the UPA would have recognized immediately. This is not the wrong moment to honor the heroes of the past. This is the only moment when we fully understand who they were and what they were fighting for. Glory to Ukraine.

We and the Poles cannot be anything but partners and friends because we are neighbors. Hatred within society will only boost certain political ratings.
