Some are asking why now. Why is Ukraine renaming military units in honor of UPA heroes? Why is President Zelenskyy elevating them at this moment? The answer is simple. There is no better moment than now. The UPA – the Ukrainian Insurgent Army – fought for the same thing Ukraine is fighting for today. Independence. Survival. The right of a Ukrainian state to exist. They fought Nazi Germany. They fought Soviet russia. Some of them fought against Polish occupation, because parts of Ukraine had been under Polish rule for centuries before 1939. Despite all odds, they fought because the alternative was annihilation. Eighty years later, Ukraine is fighting that same war against the same enemy, with the same alternative. Russian missiles are killing Ukrainian civilians tonight. Russian forces are trying to erase Ukrainian existence as a nation. Ukrainian soldiers are dying every day in a struggle the UPA would have recognized immediately. This is not the wrong moment to honor the heroes of the past. This is the only moment when we fully understand who they were and what they were fighting for. Glory to Ukraine.

Panie Prezydencie prawdziwi Polacy sa z Panem Slava ✌️

don't know about that m8, thanks for the grain though. Kosior ordered me to.

We and the Poles cannot be anything but partners and friends because we are neighbors. Hatred within society will only boost certain political ratings. This is a political struggle that could end in very dangerous escalation. Political dividends must not be gained from hatred. We are defending Poland and Europe right now. Our warriors are dying. Our servicemembers choose a heroic name for their unit themselves, and as President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief, I must support them. Karol said, “You must revoke the decree.” Beyond these historical issues, which, by the way, we discuss openly, there must also be respect for the present, for our army, and for the future. Without Ukraine, no one will be able to defend Poland. It is simply impossible. If there is no Ukraine, there will be no secure Poland either. From an interview for the United News telethon. (5/5)

@Rail_splitter1 Dmowski statue is a fair equivalent to the Bandera statues-in that case,Polish complaints are unfounded. The problem, however, is that the current controversy concerns UPA, and there is simply no symmetry there; there’s nothing that can be done about it, and it’s a losing battle.

💡 Did you know? Predecessor kingdoms and empires to modern-day Poland occupied Ukrainian people throughout history, most notably: 1349 to 1795 (446 years) 1919 to 1939 (20 years) - This is why Ukraine's UPA partisans massacred Poles most recently in 1943. That's European history. It's messy.
