I know it hurts a lot, but the truth is : Fuel isn’t “free money.” Cheaper fuel means less levy revenue for roads. Kenya has 164,967 km of roads, 15.1% paved (24,868 km); Uganda has 146,000 km, 4.4% paved (6,466 km); Tanzania has 181,000 km, 8% paved (15,000 km). Kenya uses a fuel/roads levy, and cheaper fuel still means less road funding unless the gap is covered elsewhere. The choice is simple: lower taxes and cheaper fuel with slower road development, or higher levies and stronger road expansion. The opposition should stop turning every fuel conversation into cheap politics and blaming Ruto for everything.

Kikuyu musician Kamanda wa Kioi has released a song mocking President William Ruto, with the line: “We don’t know who we shall elect, but we know who we shall not elect!” This is the same Kamanda wa Kioi who, together with his wife, had been unwell, and whose medical bills were settled by President William Ruto and his Deputy. Early last year, the musician was hospitalised at Guru Nanak Hospital. The President, together with the Deputy President, cleared a KSh 3 million hospital bill without any drama. Then his wife fell ill and was admitted at Nairobi West Hospital, where the bill came to KSh 3.5 million. The family and friends managed to raise only KSh 200,000. They appealed for help, but no one came through until Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina stepped in. She registered the family for SHA and paid the premiums. SHA covered KSh 1.5 million, leaving a balance of around KSh 2 million. After she had been locked in the hospital for nearly two months, President William Ruto personally cleared the remaining KSh 2 million. This is not a case of mere ungratefulness. It is a lack of basic human dignity and decency, the very qualities that separate us from animals. If it were someone like Samidoh or DJ Fatxo, whom the President might never have assisted directly, one might understand and give them a pass. But not Kamanda wa Kioi.

We all saw Uhuru attending parties and concerts in the country, and everyone was happy to see him regardless of their political affiliations. We all saw Uhuru attending Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, and no one was angry about it. How did Uhuru do it? How did he manage to have Kenyans behind him? How? Ruto can not even go to Church without facing hostility and someone shouting WANTAM. I mean, he can not even do the right thing. I wonder what would happen to him if he dared attend a concert. You see it all trickles down to EMPATHY. Uhuru was empathetic to the plights of Kenyans. Ironic, isn't it? That one born of privilege and status understands basic tenets of human plight, unlike the low born Ruto, who should automatically be empathetic since he too has experienced them.
