The U.S. Air Force Academy broke ground yesterday on a memorial to the Tuskegee Airmen with a replica of the P-51 Mustang they flew in 15,000 sorties and earned 850 medals. Lt. Col. James Harvey, a 100-year-old Tuskegee pilot won the inaugural Top Gun fighter pilot competition in 1949. He went on to fly with distinction in combat in Korea. Microsoft invested in OpenAI because a company with a couple hundred engineers was outperforming its own ~1,500 AI engineers. Assuming the claims are legit, history may now be repeating. Forced to do more with less, a Chinese company with 200 engineers builds a model 45x more efficient than OpenAI, spends only $5M by decomposing larger models into a team of smaller models - all with 8-bit floating point processing (vs 32-bit). The kicker - it's open source (expect a U.S. fork) which has worked beautifully for broadly used, mission critical infrastructure software and disrupted many a company. Keeps it interesting.

@github copilot, with "public code" blocked, emits large chunks of my copyrighted code, with no attribution, no LGPL license. For example, the simple prompt "sparse matrix transpose, cs_" produces my cs_transpose in CSparse. My code on left, github on right. Not OK.
