“Speak your truth quietly and clearly and respectfully, and let people know you are not against rugby, you just want to improve the quality of life for your fellow human beings. That is what this is all about.” Dr Bennet Omalu to Progressive Rugby - March 2021

@jdwgmiles Referees should be the last line of defence so to speak, but I think empowering them and educating them is a good tool.

@ProgressiveRug I totally concur with your statement. You can’t leave it to players as they are young and think that they are invincible. I had a serious head injury when I was young and was also stupid. Should the ref have more of an input although maybe unfair on them.?

In community rugby ‘if in doubt sit them out’ is paramount. Any inkling at all that a player might have suffered a concussion, that player should be off the pitch and stood down do a minimum of 21 days.
Daniel Woods@DanielWoodsPro

There is NO Head Injury Assessment (HIA) in community rugby!! I recently watched the @benyoungs09 @BBCSport documentary “How Safe is Rugby” and noted some potentially misleading comments on junior rugby concussion protocols. A first aid leader stated: “Much like a HIA in the professional game, we follow the same guidance.” This simply isn’t accurate and can lead to confusion. There is NO HIA in community rugby-including juniors, amateurs, and national leagues.

@ARugbyReferee That’s really good to hear! The team medics do an amazing job, and it isn’t always easy - the more support we can give them the better!

@ProgressiveRug Fortunately most team medics understand this (even if many players don’t) - I’ve only had one team medic try to tell me that he was going to do an HIA to determine whether a player could return. Keep spreading the word

@ProgressiveRug I’ve seen heaps of juniors blue carded for HIA - including my son. Is this not a specified law? Just ref interpretation?

We were pleased to contribute to the documentary, 'How Safe Is Rugby?', which has highlighted an important conversation on brain health in sport. We encourage people to watch the programme and continue the conversation by exploring the Big Rugby Debate. headforchange.org.uk/watch-the-big-…

Absolutely agree with this. We would also add that there is ongoing education about head and brain injuries needed. There is a module available on the @WorldRugby website; we don’t know how widely used it is.
A-P@rugby_ap

Obviously silly - but this is exactly how you expect professional competitors to behave. They will not look after their own health if they think it will disadvantage the team. Precisely why the decision has to be taken out of their hands and the tests need to be robust.

@ProgressiveRug Please tell me you are joking, and you don’t really believe that impacts above 70g are not recorded? Let me be absolutely clear, if not for you then for anyone reading this who values facts: every single impact is recorded, no matter the size. That includes many above 70.

@ProgressiveRug @HDewarSport @_AlexBywater I think the NFL have a very good approach, they limit contact time in training, it is highly regulated. Rugby Players train a lot more than they play, restricting the training might be a better/more complimentary approach.

This is an interesting idea. Player welfare should always come first. Is rugby playing a dangerous game with its condensed schedule? 👇 @ProgressiveRug @_AlexBywater dailymail.co.uk/sport/rugbyuni…
Progressive Rugby@ProgressiveRug

Player welfare is of huge concern, not just with the Nations Championship but also with the condensed 6 Nations. @WorldRugby needs to introduce mandatory guidelines for the number of minutes a player can play per season, and then rigorously enforce those limits.

@HDewarSport @_AlexBywater We would also argue that recovery from injury does not count as ‘rest’ and definitely doesn’t mean that a player can play more matches / minutes the following season!

@HDewarSport @_AlexBywater Not just the condensed schedule but also the number of internationals and top level matches played. It’s brilliant for the armchair fan but it’s awful from the player welfare perspective - Finn Russell played 39 matches last season, which is terrifying.
