“Speak your truth quietly and clearly and respectfully, and let people know you are not against rugby, you just want to improve the quality of life for your fellow human beings. That is what this is all about.” Dr Bennet Omalu to Progressive Rugby - March 2021

@ProgressiveRug @ExeterChiefs I think there's been a bit of a shift in recent weeks in refs checking with the medics whether HIAs or removals are necessary which is a good thing

The disparity between the written HIA process and the implementation are confusing - if Rob Baxter is interested, we have a panel of experts who would be delighted to have a constructive chat / discussion with him @ExeterChiefs
Progressive Rugby@ProgressiveRug

@mulcs85 Thank goodness for the independent doctor! We both know that there are a lot of resources available for coaches to educate themselves on the HIA process; given Baxter’s comments, perhaps it is time for mandatory annual training on it.

#CTE lawsuit filed by family of 1950s player results in $140 million verdict against NCAA. The NCAA refusing to recognize the sports they've organized for more than 100 years have caused CTE in athletes appears to have hurt them in this case. What's next? nbcsports.com/nfl/profootbal…

Firstly, Melbourne shouldn’t be assembling the panel of experts - they need removed from the situation so that it is all as independent as possible; secondly, even if he is ‘passed’, highly unlikely that he’ll be able to get insurance - he will be deemed an uninsurable risk.

Melbourne are set to bring in an independent medical panel to assess whether Eli Katoa can return to rugby league, with experts to review his situation over the next month. (Sydney Morning Herald)

@mulcs85 Agree with you completely - it’s a tricky one, but it needs clearer parameters around the definition.

@ProgressiveRug More than in two minds about some of the cards mitigated down as "passive" - Is bracing a hard shoulder for contact passive?

Absolutely - and could also argue that if the coach was that concerned, he should have sent the player for an HIA or just replaced him. Huge education piece needed re concussion and HIAs.

@worldrugbymedia @PremSportsTV @scienceofsport @ProgressiveRug @DavidWalshST HIA in the dock again - Last night's French blockbuster - two head knocks in carded incidents in less than 20 minutes in the 1st half – HIA’d after the first not the second – played out the match 1/3

@mulcs85 Absolutely - especially after the second incident. That shouldn’t have even been an HIA but should have been an immediate and permanent removal.

@ProgressiveRug I'll take what the coach said at face value even if we've heard similar sort of things before after a public furor - fair play to French rugby media for taking it seriously - even if it was obviously a v questionable call - what of the MMD though?

@jjsalmo Turning that around, a concussive brain injury cannot be ruled in the timeframe given for an HIA, especially given that symptoms can appear up to 72 hours later. We would prefer the approach taken at amateur level - ‘if in doubt, sit them out’.

@ProgressiveRug The HIA is a dangerous farce, applied inconsistently. Once a potential HIA incident is triggered, the player must come off, permanently. No concussion other than the most obvious can be confirmed in 10mins.

Absolutely this. If the protocol is not being consistently applied as written, from a risk perspective it cannot be relied upon. Either the protocol needs to be updated to reflect current practices or the practices need to be reviewed to match the protocol.
John Mulcahy@mulcs85

Abject failure by rugby broadcasters & media to hold @worldrugby to account - Been banging on for years - How about asking senior people in the game whether they are ok with this? And are their insurers and lawyers? @ProgressiveRug @AlixPopham @Head4Change @peterrobinson86
