The meeting focused on: 👉 Sharing scientific findings on lead exposure from informal used lead-acid battery (ULAB) recycling. 👉 Discussing the government's review of environmental clearances and upcoming enforcement actions against non-compliant facilities. 👉 Introducing plans to establish district-level ULAB Monitoring Committees, involving local communities, youth groups, educators, and NGOs. 👉 Seeking industry feedback on regulatory enforcement, formalization pathways, and potential collaboration with the government and civil society. This high-level consultation aimed to directly engage stakeholders in a dialogue on responsible recycling and pollution mitigation in the lead-acid battery industry.

On 24 April, the Department of Environment (DoE), in collaboration with Pure Earth, and support from the FFEM project, organized a Consultation Meeting with over 35 representatives from major lead-acid battery manufacturers, the Accumulator Battery Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh (ABMEAB), YouthNet, and other stakeholders. Chaired by Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, ndc, Director General of DoE; the meeting aimed to engage key stakeholders from the lead-acid battery industry in a dialogue on responsible recycling, regulatory enforcement, and strategies to mitigate lead pollution. #SafeRecycling #SolveLeadPollution #LeadFreeBangladesh #LeadPollution #LeadAcidBattery

Twelve-year-old Junayed suffers from toxic lead exposure due to an unsafe, informal lead-acid battery recycling factory in his village in Bangladesh. With 80% of such factories operating informally, they process batteries powering millions of electric vehicles (EVs), posing a severe threat to public health and the environment. “There is no accountability for the EV sector to use high-quality batteries, so they use low-quality ones that last 8-10 months, informally recycling them frequently and causing lead pollution,” said Mitali, Pure Earth, to @AFP. Through the @FFEM_Fr project, @PureEarthNow is working with partners to build capacity, formalize the EV sector (including e-bikes and e-rickshaws), establish battery standards, and push for policy reforms to ensure strict regulation and continuous monitoring for lasting change. Pure Earth’s Mitali Das was featured in @FRANCE24's latest article on lead poisoning from battery recycling in Bangladesh. 35 million children–around 60 percent of all children in Bangladesh–have elevated blood lead levels. A leading cause of lead exposure is the presence of Used Lead Acid battery (ULAB) recycling factories that have proliferated around the country. "They break down old batteries, remove the lead, and melt it down to make new ones. They do all this in the open air.
