Bir Tikendrajit Singh was born on 29 December 1856 in Kangleipak, the son of Maharaja Chandrakirti Singh and Chongtham Chanu Kouseswari Devi. Known in childhood as Koireng Sana, he rose as crown prince and commander of Manipur’s army.
He was executed by hanging on 13 August 1891 at Pheidabung, Imphal, alongside Thangal General, following the Anglo‑Manipur War and the Khongjom battle. At just 34 years old, his refusal to seek pardon made him a lasting symbol of indigenous defiance against British colonialism.
Every year, 13 August is observed as Patriots’ Day in Manipur, with Bir Tikendrajit Park in Imphal standing as a memorial at the site of his martyrdom.
