"We're waiting to find the deceased's foot so his family can put it with the rest of his body and bury him." Cannot get these words from a civil defense worker yesterday out of my head

The ambulances arriving at a main Beirut hospital on Thursday bypassed the emergency room entrance and headed straight for the morgue. There was nothing left to be done for the mangled bodies they carried. reuters.com/world/middle-e…

The Lebanese armed forces have come under much criticism lately, often because its critics fail to understand the institution's real limitations. Here, I offer an alternative proposal that addresses its fears, but also shows that it can act, at Diwan: carnegieendowment.org/middle-east/di…

Lot of this is about faith and Christianity in Lebanon but a lot of it as well is about Lebanese sheer joy to be recognized, seen and picked by such an emissary for his first trip abroad. It brings hope that Beirut is not doomed in eternal cycles of war, can see its way out.

“The Saudis have, perhaps painfully, learned that being drawn into U.S. internal politics is not only unwelcome but profoundly damaging to the #Kingdom's interests.” I was pleased to participate in—and help advance—this exceptionally timely and important discussion with leading voices on the U.S.–#Saudi partnership ahead of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to #Washington. We examine the pivotal questions shaping defense cooperation, advanced technology, regional #security dynamics, and the future direction of this strategic relationship. A critical dialogue at a pivotal moment. Link: youtu.be/z-5jD4Z_W0E

Six weeks after the US strike on Iran and a fragile Iran-Israel ceasefire, what comes next? Transforming Iran is hard yet possible with Gulf & US collaboration. It’s much better than a relapse to war, a radicalized regime, or managing regime collapse. My latest w/ @MariaFantappie agsi.org/analysis/a-new…

For Met Security Officer Armia Malak Khalil, it started as just another day—until a chance encounter and a friendly conversation led to something unexpected. Now, his art is featured in "Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876–Now." As Armia puts it, “Magic happened here.” See #MetFlightIntoEgypt now through February 17.
